Fishing at Palau Ubin Island, Singapore?
Everybody rushes to Sentosa Island when in Singapore. One offbeat item on your itinery can very well be Palau Ubin Island, for an island with a true tropical flavour. There are also old granite quarries and seashore shrim farms here. We went to the small island for the weekend – it was a fishing village 20 years back, and now can be explored on bicycles – we rented bicycles and toured the island, which I think is the best way to do it. There is only one resort there where we stayed overnight. Getting to the island was simple – you take a short ferry ride from Changi Point Jetty (Singapore).
Palau Ubin is small and it continues to have a fishing village charm. There was also extensive granite quarrying done years back, now the quarries have filled with water and look like picturesque lakes with fairly steep granite sides!! There is also some shrimp farm (seashore farms) which we spent an hour bicycling but couldn’t find. The information center assured us that we will have sign boards directing us everywhere and we also had a nice map from them, but he did not tell us that the signs were mostly in Mandarin!!! Only the major signs were in english!!!
I have some pics here (move your cursor over pic to read labels) – Pics are taken by somebody else, we didn’t have a camera. I wish we did – Karan’s bicycle seat was small for him and he had to wrap our beach towel around it to make it big enough for him to balance on the seat!!!
The first few pics are of the place we stayed in – nice place, the other pics are of the village, houses (kampongs), durian is a fruit typical of singapore – supposedly very stinky but very tasty, I have ventured only to eat durian flavoured toffee – tastes quite nice.
