Only 48 Hours in Nanjing

I only stopped in Nanjing for 48 hours. It seemed like a pleasant city, but wasn’t attractive enough to detain me longer. The time on my visa is running short and there are still too many places to visit in China before my three months are up. It is starting to appear that every country I visit will find a way to secure my interest until they’re obliged to kick me out.

I spent the first afternoon exploring the Zilin Mountain with six others from the hostel. It turned out to be a pretty boring and uneventful site, but the group-bonding was enough to draw us out for a great evening in the “1912” district. The various clubs strewn throughout this energetic nightlife area offer superb atmosphere and high quality music, but unfortunately gouge away with western-club prices.

The second day I decided to move on, but explored the area around the hostel first. It was conveniently located on the Qinhuai River by the Fuzimiao Confucian Temple. This enchanting locale is unfortunately bogged down by hordes of people, but it still manages to retain its magic at night when the colorful lighting mirrors off the river. During the last few hours of my stay I felt compelled to linger, but I’m set to head towards Suzhou; a famous canal city which promises more personality.

Nothing uniquely interesting happened during the forty-eight hours in Nanjing, except the mysterious appearance of a 22K gold fountain pen in my pocket the morning after clubbing. I probably could have stayed and soaked up a bit more of the culture, but the pressure of time is beginning to weed out the less than spectacular. So, onwards towards Suzhou! So, onwards towards Suzhou!Somehow the “hard seat” of the train on this line is a cushioned reclining seat! Luckily, I was also seated next to a man who spoke perfect English who offered me a few pointers where to eat and visit when I get in town. I’m starting to feel like I’m not in China anymore.
