Mexico!!! Aug 3 & 4, 2006

August 11th, 2006

We left San Diego heading south for the border, trying to make a few quick calls to friends and family before we lost cell service.  It was a much shorter trip than we thought and we were crossing the border without so much as a nod from the border patrol before we knew it.  This was the first of many surprises of Mexico.  Somehow I had visions of long lines of traffic with every car being searched so I was really scared our perfectly packed car would be torn to shreds – but nothing of the sort.  We simply drove through and proceeded into Tijuana.  Thankfully there is now a toll road that skirts this dirty border town and goes straight to the coast so it was only about 10 minutes before we were driving along a coastal mountain road, gazing out at the blue ocean below

Encinitas!!!  Wow, an amazing, eclectic town of shops and restaurants that overlooked the ocean.  We stopped and walked around and got on the road again, taking photos of a DHL spot from our moving car and other sites.  The drive was truly unbelievable and the people were all welcoming.  Our first impression of Mexico was unforgettable.  We winded through mountains and cliffs, seeing farms and small towns as we neared the beach.  We both decided it was the most beautiful drive we had ever taken.  We passed through a small fishing village and decided to keep driving south.  At dusk, we approached Punta San Isidro and Coyote Cal’s, a hostel located on the beach with all the amenities one needs.  We stayed there for the night, met some locals that gave us some tips about some nearby surf breaks. San Diego – July 31, 2006

August 11th, 2006

Happy Birthday Jenny!  We woke up and took our time getting to San Diego then spent the day with Jessica and her friend Ruth in Rancho Santa Fe.  Definitely impressed with the quaint little town of ranches, farms and amazing houses hidden in busy California right near the beach.  After some surf lessons for the family and some much needed R & R Jessica cooked Jenny a birthday dinner the likes of which we hadn’t seen in awhile.  It was nice being pampered again one last time before setting out for Mexico.  Thanks Ruth and Jessica for the hospitality, generosity and amazing grub!

We spent the next two days in Pacific Beach with our friends Jed, Alyssa and Kevin.  I finally got some surfing in and we took in the whole Southern California everything-at-your-fingertips (for a hefty price) scene.  We must have repacked the car ten times as we kept buying last minute must-have items for the trip.  After a stop by the grocery store for “just a few more things” our entire car was full.  Then Jed surprised us with a huge Army bag of great outdoor gear compliments of the US Navy Seals – no way we could turn that down.  Lets just say we could probably survive in the desert (or perched on the side of a cliff) for the next few months if we had to.

After one final farewell/Jenny Bday dinner we said our last goodbyes to our friends and got ready to leave early the next morning.  Thanks guys for all the help!

Grand Canyon – July 30, 2006

August 11th, 2006

We woke up and made our way to the airplane graveyards in Tucson early in the am.  Not planning ahead much, we thought we’d be walking around climbing all over retired airplanes for hours, snapping some cool shots.  No, we were quickly told at the museum that many of the planes in the “bone yard” were actually still top secret so we would be shot if we jumped the fence to check them out.  Instead of settling for the tour of the tiny graveyard outside the museum, we drove as close as we could to the real thing to get some shots.  From the road, you could still see miles and miles of airplanes that have been put to rest, B-52s, C-5 Cargo, F-18 Fighter Jets – just to name a few.  They were arranged perfectly, most with their propellers even turned in the same direction.

After some exploring we left for the Grand Canyon – a 4-5hr drive.  At first we were stuck in traffic, so we decided to taste the world famous cantaloupe….best we had ever had!  The drive was beautiful, Arizona’s landscape far more appealing than New Mexico or Texas had been.  Closer to the canyon though, the land gets rocky and flat for miles and miles as you make the climb to approx 7000 ft – it felt like we were driving on Mars.  We drove through the Painted Desert-it was a dark, clay red with intense winds.  Eventually, we came to the entrance of a forest and the Grand Canyon!  We went to a lot of viewpoints, took photos and rushed to make the 9-hour drive to San Diego, seeing deer along the way and a beautiful sunset through the Mojave Desert.  We would recommend spending more time and camping there…but we were in a hurry to get out of the car!

We drove through the San Bernardino valley and ended up about 45 minutes from San Diego in Riverside.  As we pulled into our dingy Travel Inn, we made the biggest mistake of the trip so far – parking right under a large tree with the branches resting on the car for the night…ants live in trees and we are basically living in our car – not a good combination.  Tips #1, if you don’t want your car to be infested with ants, don’t park under a tree.  We now have ants coming out of every crevice while we’re driving, thankfully not biting, but definitely annoying our peaceful trip.  Although they’ve suffered many losses smashed on the dashboard and windshield, they are definitely winning this battle so far!

Tamales and Caverns – July 29, 2006

August 11th, 2006

We left San Antonio with our sights set on Tucson, but first we had to detour north about 2 hours into New Mexico to see the Carlsbad Caverns.  We passed through Pecos, Texas, right before the border.  Pecos is a tiny town – in the middle of nowhere.  We found La Nortena, a world famous tamale drive through, except there was no drive.  We walked inside and met the locals, ordered tamales and were told about their world famous cantaloupe, used in Bluebell ice cream.  So, we had to try one out; they were about to have a cantaloupe parade.  We bought one for a dollar and were given one for free.

The Carlsbad Caverns were pretty impressive – huge, football field sized caverns 750 feet below ground with stalagmites (sp?) in every shape imaginable football.  We walked a loop about 1.2 miles long but didn’t even see a fraction of the whole cavern.  Although they were discovered nearly a century ago, there are still parts that are unexplored.  But, since time was wasting, we hurried out to get on the road to Tucson.  After another 7 – 8 hours of driving we were in a hotel resting for the next day.

3am and Finally on the Road – July 28, 2006

August 11th, 2006

We peeled ourselves out of bed on Friday at 3 am.  We quietly snuck out onto the dark, desolate streets.  As soon as we got onto the road, the surfboard straps began pounding on the roof of the car and Chris wasn’t having it.  We pulled over and he fixed it-or so he thought.  We began driving again and the pounding began again and so we pulled over and he fixed it-or so he thought.  On the empty road for a third time, but the quiet drive was once again interrupted by obnoxious straps.  It was time for some duct tape.  Chris broke it out and had a major fight with the tape….finally getting it fixed….taking all four boards off of the roof and readjusting.  It was fixed at 4:16am.  Read the rest of this entry »

London, Paris, Tallahassee – July 27, 2006

August 11th, 2006

The voyage so far has landed us in Sanford, Jacksonville and Tallahassee – catching up with family, running last minute errands and absolutely stuffing our faces with amazing cooking – not exactly what you would call roughing it.  We just got back from a terrific Italian dinner with Mamaw and I’m wondering when the “living off of the land” is actually gonna start.  Jenny and I have joked that, with some creative Photoshop skills, we could hole up here with family for a year and just insert ourselves in pictures of far away places – no one back home would know.  No, we’re more anxious than ever to get on the road and can’t wait for what’s ahead.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Many Goodbyes – July 23, 2006

August 11th, 2006

We’ve been really slack at updating the site since we opened it so hopefully that won’t become a habit. There is an excuse though – in the past three weeks we got our house rented and had to completely pack and move out, give up our jobs, sell our car, let it go and kiss it goodbye, try to finish planning the trip, put all of our affairs in order and try to pack up everything we thought we’d need for the next year. Oh yeah-we also wanted to spend as much time as possible with family, friends and our four-legged son. But we are actually TAKING THIS TRIP!  We are still blown away that this is actually happening. We have never backpacked before and we don’t have any idea what lies ahead.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Honeymoon – June 27, 2006

August 11th, 2006

It started out so easy – rent the house, give up our jobs and go travel for 8 months.  After all of our planning we knew that wasn’t even the beginning, but the overall plan is still the same and it is all starting to come together.  After we drop off our son Morgan with Jenny’s parents, say our goodbyes to friends and spend some time with family, we’re pointing the Rodeo west.  Read the rest of this entry »
