What's It All About??

I guess 2007 is my mid life crisis........making the decision to leave a good job, friends and family to show the world to the kids some might say is a bit mad but it just feels so right. They say you only regret the things you haven't done, not the things you have - I want to have something to talk about when I am old and grey! 9 months, 14 countries and 2 teenagers, how intact will my sanity be on my return??

The Open Road At Last

September 20th, 2007

September 18th:

Woke up to yet another glorious day of sunshine. Leisurely start as we had to go and pick up the car from Buffalo Airport. Nobody had a great night’s sleep, I was worried about driving the car and Josh was on mouse watch. We discovered a little visitor in the room and while it didn’t bother Ophelie and I, Josh was a bit freaked out by it!

At the car rental counter the lady behind the desk said we should look at upgrading as the car was very small for 3 of us and for such a long trip but she has obviously never seen us in the Metro – complete with Ikea dining room table and chairs! It’s the size of a Sierra so not bad. Getting out on the road was great. Listening to the radio where songs twang about a-huggin and a-kissin and an undying love for Jesus really make us feel like we are here. Josh begs to turn it off but the alternative bickering in the back is just not enough reason – oh and are we there yet??? I must just remember – steering wheel in the middle of the road and we were off.  Stopped in Eerie and although the houses were nice there wasn’t really much else going on so we pressed on to Cleveland. We arrived just in time to see The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

 Cleveland Rocks  Guitar

The photos are of huge guitars that are all outside. It was a cool place with an exhibition on The Clash that had the original handwritten lyrics to London’s Calling, John Lennon’s Sgt Pepper’s jacket and weird stuff like letters The Damned wrote to The Ramones from 11a Burchington St, London NW8 – so bizarre! Loads of stuff to see but the only thing O was impressed with was anything to do with The Rolling Stones. Yep she’s a real fan – when I showed her Keith Richards’ guitar – she goes “Who’s Keith Richards” and didn’t click until I explained he was Johnny Depp’s dad in Pirates! I made sure she realised she was in the lap of the Gods when we passed Jimi Hendricks lyrics, outfits and guitars.  We are staying at a Super 8 at Westlakes – just outside of Cleveland. Found a great deli to eat in Rocky River. It was a v posh suburb with fab houses. We even passed the High School where the marching band were practising, wraparound tubas and everything– onto Chicago tomorrow! Check out the photo albums at http://www.flickr.com/photos/13512113@N06/. I think you might have to register but just look for 3goglobal.

Niagara Falls

Gringo in Niagara

Saturday September 15th. We were sad to say goodbye to NY but it was time to move on. We took the Amtrak train up to Niagara Falls – about a 10 hour trip. It was v relaxing to take the world in at a slower pace. The train followed the Hudson River up for most of the way, beautiful scenery – forest covered mountains, circling hawks and the sun shining off the river. The guards on the trains are characters themselves and really make you feel welcome. We arrived in Niagara late and it was straight off to the hotel and bed.

Sunday September 16th. A cloudy but warm day. Why is it in America you do not seem to be able to get around without a car? There are loads of bus stops but no buses. We decided to “hike” the concrete jungle that is Niagara to the falls – we finally got on a bus after an hour. We’d nearly made it into town by this time!! It is a rundown, industrial area – imagine Bognor Regis in the 70’s – basically a bit of a dump. It took us a while to actually find the falls as they are not really marked.

The falls themselves are spectacular. Hearing the rush of water that fast is amazing.

 Horseshoe Falls  Blue Adventurers

We donned the famous blue ponchos and boarded the Maid of the Mist, got completely soaked but we were still laughing at the end of it. I wound up the kids saying the lift down to the boat was free but because we had gone over budget that day we had to walk up as you had to pay – ohhh the faces they pulled!!!

Popped into Canada for something to eat – kids were chuffed as the passports were stamped. The view of the falls is much better from the Canadian side – in fact it seems that the Canadians have much more fun as everything was much better laid out. Tip for anyone wanting to see the falls – stay on the Canadian side!

We caught the bus back – all the way this time! We were getting near to the hotel and we stopped (the bus was full) the bus driver shouts – “Hey You Miss – in the sunglasses, come here and bring the kids”. This is it I thought – we have violated some ridiculous little law like sitting on our seats wrong or something. We nervously walked up to the front of the bus and the driver says “This is the last stop on this road, for your hotel I would get off now”. The relief, I really thought we were in trouble. In hindsight I think the driver just enjoyed the power of making you feel a little bit smaller! Dumb Limeys right….

The Big Apple – 2

Battery Park Memorial
Originally uploaded by roupiesontour

Ha ha I have at last worked out how to access the free internet in the room. I came up last night after uploading the blog from the wi-fi hotspot in the lobby and both the kids were fast asleep!

Got up a bit later today………well we completely overslept after all of yesterday’s walking. First stop was Ground Zero. I don’t quite know what I expected but is certainly a strange place. The site is fenced off as building is underway on a new tower as a memorial – apart from that there is really nothing there. The area is conspicuous as it is surrounded on all sides by massive buildings and the site is a gaping hole. I could only look up at the other buildings and see how far those people who jumped had to fall. I just cannot imagine what the panic must have been like – it made me want to cry. We left the area quickly afterwards. The photo is of a memorial we came across at Battery Park, the fireman’s jacket a freaky icon.

Brooklyn Bridge 15 minutes later and my spirits had a chance to soar – I finally got to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge – a top 10 things to do before I die completed.

It was amazing, New Yorkers seem to use it to exercise, jogging, cycling (do not dare to walk in the cycle lane, the abuse a poor Spanish couple received turned the air blue!) and for catching up on gossip while power walking. I touched the arches and again my mind was off wandering about the men who had constructed it – it was such a feat at the time.

Bag LadyWalking around I am surprised about the number of homeless people. The lady in the picture was rummaging through the bins. Some carry laptop bags and look quite smart until you see their shoes are full of holes. One guy we met was handing out cards trying to get people to help test Aids vaccines – he was HIV positive and was also trying to educate people – that’s just the New York style – despite adversity there’s still always time for a joke.

GhostbustersThe afternoon saw us catching the orange Staten Island ferry, I can’t believe it is free. Great views of Manhattan and Statue of Liberty and the theme tune for “Working Girl” would not go out of my head all day – “Let The River Run……….” Also managed to visit Hook & Ladder 8, the home of Ghostbusters and the Friends building for Ophelie. She was surprised at how different it looks to the series. I loved meandering around Tribeca and Soho, imagining winning the lottery and having a nice little brownstone here……..as you do. Every time we got the map out for more than 10 seconds someone would come up and ask if we needed help and we would usually end up with a little history about their city too. Can not imagine people in London being as friendly.

The Big Apple

September 12th, 2007

We arrived late at the hotel – JFK to Newark was not much fun but we did it and fell into bed exhausted. The subway is not scary at night – just very colourful characters! The art is amazing too……. Subway Art

We did go through the Lincoln Tunnel on the way though so O now knows how Elf got to NY.

The day dawned to beautiful blue skies so it was up early to make the most of it. We managed to get into Manhattan from Newark for $5 each – it would have been $3 each but we took the wrong train. The cheap route meant taking a bus into Newark but also got to mix with the locals, who turned out to be from Ireland!

Empire State Building was the first stop and the views never disappoint. O made me laugh, we were trying to point out Central Park to her and she could not understand what all the fuss was about, turns out she was looking at a really small park by a church – her eyes had not gone that little bit further to the huge green space that finally got her attention.

Central Park - Not Birds Eye View

(check out the small green space!)

 Empire State

Had a picnic in Central Park after walking up 5th Avenue and did not even go into Tiffany’s this time to have a look at all the diamonds. The picnic was great, a jazz band was playing and the sun was shining so a nice chance to rest weary feet. The kids only seem impressed when they can match the sights to a film so here is the “Spider Man Bridge” in Central Park.  Spiderman Bridge

The kids really wanted to go to the Museum of Natural History to see the sights that were in the film One Night In The Museum. We saw the Dum Dum head,    the monkeys, dinosaur skeleton (different from the one in the film). The best bit was the Planetarium with a 360 degree film about the Universe which Josh loved. The display after was great foDum Dum Headr women – just look at my weight on Halley’s Comet!  Weightless

Just to show you – this amused O a lot – the old ones are still the best!   Old JokeEveryone has been really friendly and eager to help. We must look completely helpless, some old guy at one point just started talking to us outside the Rockefeller Centre about good things to see. He had worked in NY for 30 years so was good to get an inside perspective.

Best photo opportunity was at Penn station – who knew such a place actually existed – this has got to be worth a visit……..Hicksville

Leaving On A Jet Plane……………

September 12th, 2007

I am already behind with all this blog thing so I will try to catch up all at once. I am posing a bit and typing this up on the plane – If I make the writing any smaller the people peering over to read it will fall out of their seats.

This past week has flashed by in a blur – I can’t believe I am sitting here on a plane already having left my beloved country – I didn’t even kiss the tarmac. I didn’t have time to get excited at all, there was so much to do, I only finished my tax return at 9pm last night.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to those of you who accompanied me out on a fair few farewell do’s. I had a great time at each one and here are some photos just to remind you…………

Night OUt 4    Night Out 3   Night Out 1

I still have the words to New York New York on my mind and to the girls I have seen some dancing on the telly and have worked out what you are supposed to do with your hands now!

I have been dreading my last day at work for ages. The day dawned and the morning passed as usual ( well as normal as can be expected when you desk is covered in glittery purple bits!).

It was in the afternoon that I turned round to find a crowd gathered behind me and Clemens prepared with speech. I can honestly say I was completely overwhelmed with all the kind wishes, gifts and the best gift the promise of the strippergrams…….oops no I meant the memory book. The book was the one thing that got me going and I made my way through the box of tissues. Thank you so much to everyone who filled in the book and to Diane who bullied you all in to writing nice things. I hate to think what she threatened if you had just written the truth 😉

My last days have been filled with packing up and cleaning the house, ferrying the kids to Mum & Dad’s and trying to remember I need to pack my rucksack. I feel glad to be leaving the house because of what it represented and let’s face it – it was the opposite of the Tardis – it looked larger on the outside and shrank when you walked inside.

Sunday I managed to chill for a few hours watching Diane’s son play football. We missed him scoring a goal as the need for ice cream was just too strong. The weather was great and I really enjoyed it. The downside was all the goodbyes I have had to say but it is not forever………..

Dad took us to the airport in his Jag in style. The airport was not busy but we shared the check in q with a 50 strong rugby team so it could have been worse. They are actually on this flight as they are on a 9/11 memorial tour in the states – very quiet though.

I finally got excited at the airport – I can’t wait to show New York to the kids – I hope they get the same vibe that I did. I’m only worried about the bit after……….

11 Days To Go……..

August 30th, 2007

Have you ever felt like you are clinging onto a runaway train and there is nothing you can do about it?

I have so many lists on the go I have lists for my lists. I keep kidding myself I should be all professional and project manage this thing but then I get completely sidetracked and another day has flown by with nothing achieved. Oh God – this time next week all of our furniture will be in storage and we will be sleeping on blow up beds in an empty house. How did this all come around so quickly?

I have not had time to get excited or really think that I am about to leave my mundane life with all it’s little routines. Instead it feels like every minute is taken up with organising something or other. I started to say goodbye to people at work today who I might never see again – ever. It still did not sink in – maybe on the plane I might finally click that our free time lasts until June next year……….

My little cards arrived tonight with our blog and e-mail details – I got a few butterflies opening them. I wonder if after I give them out people will read this? It feels a bit weird putting my thoughts on-line but I guess it beats typing out 20 e-mails each time!

Note to self – don’t forget to pack Marmite
