The Big Apple
Wednesday, September 12th, 2007We arrived late at the hotel – JFK to Newark was not much fun but we did it and fell into bed exhausted. The subway is not scary at night – just very colourful characters! The art is amazing too……. 
We did go through the Lincoln Tunnel on the way though so O now knows how Elf got to NY.
The day dawned to beautiful blue skies so it was up early to make the most of it. We managed to get into Manhattan from Newark for $5 each – it would have been $3 each but we took the wrong train. The cheap route meant taking a bus into Newark but also got to mix with the locals, who turned out to be from Ireland!
Empire State Building was the first stop and the views never disappoint. O made me laugh, we were trying to point out Central Park to her and she could not understand what all the fuss was about, turns out she was looking at a really small park by a church – her eyes had not gone that little bit further to the huge green space that finally got her attention.

Had a picnic in Central Park after walking up 5th Avenue and did not even go into Tiffany’s this time to have a look at all the diamonds. The picnic was great, a jazz band was playing and the sun was shining so a nice chance to rest weary feet. The kids only seem impressed when they can match the sights to a film so here is the “Spider Man Bridge” in Central Park. 
The kids really wanted to go to the Museum of Natural History to see the sights that were in the film One Night In The Museum. We saw the Dum Dum head, the monkeys, dinosaur skeleton (different from the one in the film). The best bit was the Planetarium with a 360 degree film about the Universe which Josh loved. The display after was great fo
r women – just look at my weight on Halley’s Comet! 
Just to show you – this amused O a lot – the old ones are still the best! 
Everyone has been really friendly and eager to help. We must look completely helpless, some old guy at one point just started talking to us outside the Rockefeller Centre about good things to see. He had worked in NY for 30 years so was good to get an inside perspective.
Best photo opportunity was at Penn station – who knew such a place actually existed – this has got to be worth a visit……..
