September 01, 2004Our New BBQ
The next hurdle to jump was finding charcoal (heat beads) whatever you want to call them. I had been asking everyone where I could buy them, I 'd even gone to the extent of writing it in my guide book in Chinese characters. Market after market failed, even trying to buy some from a BBQ on wheels shop failed (I was very lucky with the bike), but eventually I hit the jackpot I asked a man on a motorbike. He said something like jump on love and away we went. I would never have found the place by myself. We rode through villages and dogs and cats. I wish I'd had a video camera. Eventually we popped out at a very small shed and there the charcoal was. Bags and bags of the stuff. In Qingtian they had a green gel you poured on the coal and lit very easily. 5 minutes later you'd be cooking. My charades when asking about this weren't great and when I returned home I realised I'd been given diesel. Mintie would have been impressed with such "whoof juice". So last night we cooked our first barbie out on the table and chairs just outside our room. It brought a lot of attention and like all barbies the men discussed whether or not Trev was cooking the meat correctly or not. Everyone had some input. Comments
