July 12, 2004Stepped Fields
As Qingtian is surrounded by mountains it's necessary for the farmers to step their fields, otherwise they'd just have wasted land no good for growing anything. As we walked to the Buddah yesterday amongst these fields we finally saw the "field fish" which is often on the menu. We had been told it was farmed in the rice fields but had never seen it. We even asked Mr Fish, the only fisherman we know here, how they catch them and he explained they drain the water from the field and leave the fish flapping. I can't imagine being knee deep in water and mud picking rice with these over sized gold fish. Comments
