A1 race

December 1st, 2005

We went to an A1 race here in Malaysia. Not really my thing, but it turned out to be very cool. Those cars are so loud! The cool thing is, each car represents a country so that makes it easy to decide who to root for when you know nothing about racing. The Kiwis had the coolest car, but Malaysia did give me a free T-shirt. The US car was very cool, too. It had “We The People” written all over it in tons of different languages. Here are a few pics.
The way they do this race is interesting also. It is supposed to be a true test of who is the better driver, so the outside of the car is just a shell. When they pack up and move on to a new location they deassemble everything and reassemble the shell onto a different motor, etc. at the next location. Apparently, the drivers like draw numbers or something so it is random what car they will have.

Almost ready to go…

November 3rd, 2005

We are about ready to go. We are all packed, got my passport renewed and we are getting excited. I bought Lonely Planet Malaysia yesterday and it really contributed to our excitement. The diving looks fantastic, there are beautiful national parks, mountains to climb, the food sounds great and there are shopping malls and movie theathers galore. Sounds like all the bases are covered.
Can’t wait to start posting pictures from our adventures again.

Maine, Vermont, zipping through New England, going to KL

October 22nd, 2005

I am going to put up some photos from Maine, Vermont and other locations through the New England states. Unfortunately, we’ve really rushed through the area because after getting a call from a former co-worker over in Malaysia, I’m headed over there to do some contract work for 3 or 4 months and need to leave ASAP. It seemed like an interesting new adventure and a good way to offset the $3 a gallon gas prices for the RV. The weather is getting cold and we were thinking of heading south anyway, we just didn’t know how far east it would be. 🙂
So, the ‘Summer in the States’ is coming to a close and the blog will be maintained with adventures of living and working in Kuala Lumpur.

Niagara Falls & Mt. Marcy

October 16th, 2005

I had always wanted to visit Niagara Falls, and finally we got to. We splurged and did all the tourist attractions, saw the IMAX, went to the Canadian side, went on the Maid of the Mist boat ride, the whole enchilada. It was worth it, we had a great time.

Mt. Marcy was a different story. The Adirondak Park where Mt. Marcy is located is just beautiful. The leaves were turning and it was cold and rainy when we were there but that was perfect. The first night where we camped it was so dark it was spooky, I could really imagine a sasquatch living in those woods!

Anyway, we arrived at the trailhead to Mt. Marcy too late to hike the entire thing that day (it’s about 15 miles round trip) but early enough we wanted to do something. So we decided to backpack in half way, camp and summit the following day. Unfortunately we had no idea there are only two designated camp grounds along the trail, very near the beginning. So we passed them both and kept hiking until a ranger told us we had to turn around and hike 2 miles down to camp! We didn’t think that sounded fun so we put our packs beside the trail and went as fast as we could to the top. We got to the summit before dark, no problem but it got dark on us on our way down. We had headlamps, no big deal but we were worried about bears, apparently there is a lot of activity in the area. So we sang 99 bottles of beer on the wall the whole way down so the bears would know we were coming.
After we got to our packs we thought all would be well, but both our headlamps burnt out almost simultaneously on the way down. We ended up navigating the last mile to the campsite with a little LED light I keep on my keychain! Lucky we had that!!

Ohio, it’s nicer than you’d think

October 16th, 2005

We zoomed through Indiana and Ohio pretty fast, but I really think Ohio should change the state slogan to ‘Ohio, it’s nicer than you’d think’. Because it really is, I never thought it would be so pretty but down in the Cuyahoga Valley with the leaves turning was just gorgeous. They just made party of the valley a national park in 2000, that’s how nice it is. So their high point is in a vocational school, there is a lot of beautiful country around there. Check out the photos….

Illinois, Land of Linclon

October 16th, 2005

Well, I’m a little behind in putting this post up, but better late than never I guess. While we were quite disappointed to find out that the land owners of Charles Mound (Illinois’ highest point) have changed their access policy and would not allow us to visit the high point (trespassing was out, they’d already seen us) we had a good time visiting with family.
We stopped at Bud and Lori’s and got to see their lake house, we even got to go for a boat ride and Dave went swimming, although it was just too cold for me. We also visited the new Linclon museum in Springfield, Illinois. If you are ever in the area, check it out. They have a hologram movie that was just incredible! We also visited the townsite where Linclon owned a general store and worked as a surveyor.
Then Mike met us at Kickapoo State Park. I guess we had too much fun, I didn’t even take any pictures! We went on a canoe trip and a crazy mountain bike ride on which we all wrecked at least once at got lost. It was fun, despite the Nazi-like rules by which the park was run. Why have all those nice lakes and not let people swim in them? When asked, they said, ‘um, I think some people got hurt once.’ So click below to see pictures, but I only have one photo from the entire state of Illinois.
