White teeth big eyes wide smiles

“Children are like oxygen for me,” my dad says with a grin as he climbs into the van, camera bulging with colorful portraits, palms still tingling from high fives.

It’s one of the reasons I love traveling with my parents. Besides the perks that my mother brings homemade cookies and we sleep in places with normal plumbing, you are guaranteed to see tiny villages occupied by more ox carts and bicycles than cars. And you will certainly be surrounded by kids. So, a rapid summary of the images that will make me smile for a long time….

Gorgeous teen girls smiling shyly as my dad poses them for glamour shots;
A naked boy getting in line for his bowl of noodles, seemingly unaware that he’s the only one baring his bum;
The little girl with one eye grinning for the camera like a true princess;
Hundreds of ducks kicking up dust as they are herded across the street;
The enthustic clapper who is an Asian version of my nephew Tyler;
Older boys taking care of tiny ones–sharing drinks, brushing off rice and boogers;
The little girl dancing her thanks for a hard-boiled egg (of course, this was in the village where spiders were sold by the plateful);
Old women grinning with teeth missing or red from chewing beetlenut;
Mothers beaming when you ask to take their picture, proudly pushing their children forward;
Men running to lash the unruly Christmas tree to a post when it repeatedly blows over;
Bright balloon hats tinging little brown faces pink, green, yellow, and orange.

And a luxuriant end to a good couple days: dinner reclining in wicker chairs, frosted glasses of ice cream, a massage with my mama. Life is good. : )
