Greenland: Inventory

Of course the old backpack would have been perfect. It had some funny pockets, but after nearly 2 months on the road, I knew where to put everything and find it again, quickly.

The new pack is too small. It was either that, or an unwieldy 85l job. At 65 litres, the thing is the pefect size for SE Asia, but for Greenland? I can’t seem to find any room for my packets of dried noodles. Perhaps they’ll have to stay at home, to be replaced with dried fruit, chocolate and nuts.

As it is, the various bits I have to find room for, or attach to the outside are:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag (ca. 30 l volume!)
  • light-weight wool blanket
  • 4-Seasons’ Insulation Mat
  • 1 pair jeans
  • 1 pair jogging pants
  • 1 long-sleeved T-shirt
  • 1 brushed cotton shirt
  • 1 short-sleeved T-shirt (yes, even Greenland can get warm…)
  • 1 Wooly Sweater (…just don’t bank on it!)
  • gloves (I may have to buy ear-muffs)
  • 1 small towel
  • 3 pairs cotton socks
  • 1 Sports Bra
  • 3 underpants

The various side-pockets contain: mug, soap, sunscreen, toothbrush, toothpaste, vaseline, medicine, nailclip, cables, spare specs, silica dessicator, battery charger, pipe, lighters, film rolls, tampons, pocket knife, vitamin pills, earplugs, first-aid pack and peanuts.

My hand luggage contains: water bottle, digital camera, optical camera (with tele-lens), reading material (to be acquired), journal, pens, wallet, smokes etc.

Passport and tickets will be in my money belt. Not because people steal in Denmark (or Greenland), but because have been known to forget my bag.

I’ll be wearing a (hot!) pair of chunky Gore-tex boots, long jeans, long-sleeved T-shirt and jacket—and it will probably be over 30°C all day long in Copenhagen. At least I can swap for the short-sleeved shirt and perhaps walk barefoot in the park. —So long as I keep my wooly sweater handy when we touch down in Kangerlussuaq!

The Zaurus stays at home. Shocking, I know, but being a mini-laptop, it has a battery life of around eight hours max and it will take all night to charge. Even with a battery extention, it will be impractical for camping in the field. Besides, I don’t expect to find any WiFi hotspots around Disko Bay. The thing will be fully customized—with the latest Linux kernel—for our Australia trip in January and will come into its own as an all-singing-all-dancing machine. We could even hook up a DVD drive to watch movies; it is that good. All inclusive weight with cables, cards and bag (but not DVD drive): 620g. PDA, anyone?
