The aftermath of the Cross Island walk / Le lendemain de la “Promenade”

On Saturday we went to the market in Avarua. I was aching from the moment I got out of bed, and it went on for 3 days. Stairs were murder. [read on]

Rarotonga Cross Island “walk”, more like a bloody trek!!!! / Tu parles d’une promenade!!!!

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Ok, so on Friday, we rise and shine early-ish ang get the bus into Avarua to do the Cross Island Trek. We each had 2 litres of water, our walking shoes, thank God for that. We were told it will take about 4 hours, but you really pace yourself and it is quite simple. That is right, IF YOU PAY FOR THE GUIDE TO WALK WITH YOU!!!! We have suffered! You start north of the island and climb up a very steep and dangerous hill, that offers you a view of the Needle (their peak). Great, but there are so many trees and ferns you barely see anything, and anyway you are knackered you just sit down and try to get your breath back. It is dangerous in the way that all you have to help you climb are the tree roots. And they are not just nice little ones that you climb singing and dancing. Most of them are about 80cm high!It is ok if it is one or two, but 90mins worth of it is far too much. Before leaving, we had lathered ourselves in mosquito repellent, problem is that we sweat so much it came off us and mosquitoes loved it!!! We also had to cross the river over and over again for an hour. In the end we were so tired it was easier just to walk in it with your shoes. Not at one point di we know if we were on the right path. At last we reached the falls. They were just …falls 🙁 . We walked along the road, stopped for a drink in a café and got the bus back to Vara’s, knackered, dirty and smelly. Talk about walking to get a good health!

On a souffert.

We arrived in Rarotonga at 3am. We were welcomed at the airport by an old guy and his guitar, singing under flower garlands. Everybody had a flower in their hair, even the security guards and the customs officials. We arrived at ... [Continue reading this entry]
