Day 59 – It is the first official ‘seattle weather’ day we have had while here – and yes Sarah, this is normal weather for Seattle maybe a bit less wind.. have fun! I know it sounds strange, but to me it is comforting to have some rain and clouds – hard to get away from what you grow up with.

Yesterday Holly, Cole, and I went to Gas Works Park in Seattle. It is a fine park to enjoy nice views of Seattle while sitting in the grass or next to the water. They did a nice job integrating the industrial gas plant that they use to use for converting coal into gas into a city park for people to relax in and fly kites. We also met Norman – Jay and Yi-Chun’s super cat that has crazy jumping powers.

Our vw is officially sold, so sad to say good bye – but I know it is in good hands and will be well taken care of. Have fun with him Allison.

Day 58 – The weather in Seattle has been really great – super sunny and warm for this time of year. Though, we are told by the weather forecast that the normal cloudy rainy day will be coming soon. Which I don’t mind, except we are planning on having a garage sale this weekend to sell all the stuff that I have been sorting through this past week. We had two places we were storing our belongings that we left behind when we moved to nyc – and we have finally gone through most of it. There are a few things still left down in Shelton that need to be sorted through – though none of it would be garage sale material.

This past Sunday we went over to Marymoor Park to watch my brother Peter play ultimate frisbee. It is an interesting game to watch and looks tiring – man do they run a lot. After the game we went to see what downtown Kirkland was all about, and had a good lunch. Besides that, we’ve just been hanging out with my little nephew Cole, and my family, and sorting through our dusty stored items.

Oh, and there is some good news – we potentially sold our car; though we haven’t bought a car yet, so we will see how good Seattle’s public transportation system really is.

My brother is really fast!

Day 54 – We spent the past few nights visiting my mom, Nina, in Ballard – visiting the Ballard Locks and drinking coffee. Now we are staying at my sister Holly’s house right now – watching her dog and cat this weekend until they come back. The weather is cooler than I thought it would be in Seattle, but today and tomorrow it is supposed to be really nice – so far the sun has been shining all day today.

The Seattle Sounders game was fun to watch, though not the greatest level of soccer – it was good to see such a fan base supporting the best sport out there 😉 The Sounders tied 2-2 to Montreal, they were ahead the whole game until the last ten minutes when Montreal put in two really nice goals within five minutes. Isn’t that always how it goes? They play in Montreal for the second game to see who goes onto the finals.

We had our VW Golf detailed yesterday by Pacific Auto Detail in Seattle, and it looks like a brand new car – it was covered in dirt before they took it into the shop and now it is all shiny and clean inside and out. It is up for sale now – so sad to see such a great car go. I think I am sold on buying another VW when we get back from our travels. We are having a hard time figuring out what type of car to buy for the rest of our journey: we want to get a camper van so that we can just sleep in the back and have a mini-home for when the weather is bad or we don’t feel comfortable with our surroundings – but we also need a 4×4 vehicle so that we don’t get stuck on any muddy or rough roads. So, we’re looking at 4wd Toyota vans and VW vans.

Simon – my sister’s dog. Isn’t he cute!

Day 51 – So, now starts the visiting of friends and family – we are staying in Washington state for about two months. Our major stops while in Washington are Seattle, Olympia, Shelton, Tenino, and Vancouver. I am excited because tomorrow I am meeting up with a friend of mine that I meant at nyc (another soccer teammate) that just moved to Seattle and we are going to go watch the Seattle Sounders, a soccer team, play Montreal in the semi-finals for the USL. I had no clue the Sounders were that good, it should be fun to watch.

We are also doing some exciting stuff, like researching and getting details taken care of for our next leg of our journey… our international trip. We are selling our lovely vw golf and getting a 4×4 van or 4runner, then we have to fix it up and get all the paper work squared away. Other details are prescriptions and the rest of our shots for traveling, road atlases, insurances, registration for Spanish courses in Baja, and the list goes on.

Day 50 – and still driving… I took a wrong turn, or really I should say – I didn’t take a turn and went straight down hwy 37 that turns into hwy 37A to Stewart. It was probably the best thing we’ve done this trip. The detour drive was so so beautiful. Winding down the smooth road between sharp towering mountains we drove towards the clouds that were just lifting out of the valley ahead of us. As we came around one of the bends the surprising view of a medium glacier that was radiating the morning light shining through the clouds and sitting in a small pond with chucks of ice floating around. I would love to wake up to this sight everyday. The rest of the drive down to Stewart had unlimited amounts of waterfalls coming down from the ridge of the mountains to the huge river bed below. Of course there were no pictures taken, it was too early – and the co-pilot was still sleep. The accidental detour put us an hour and a half behind, but we reached our goal of arriving in Seattle that night. It was a 2.30am arrival – but nice to sleep in a bed instead of the car.

One of the three rainbows we saw today. You can’t really tell in the picture, but it was so bright – looked just like a neon sign and as we came down a hill you could see both ends of it landing in a field in the valley – plus a second rainbow right above it. It was really impressive – neon rainbows…. only in ‘Super, Natural British Columbia’ – that is their welcome sign slogan.

Day 49 – kept driving….. I have to say hwy 37 is great to drive in British Columbia – but be pre-pared for some rough roads and dirt roads – and do it all during the day. After our second stretch of dirt road I received the shock of rolling onto brand new asphalt road with brightly painted lines on it. After driving down either old paved road with no lines or a dirt road for the past 300 miles, brand new asphalt with lines that even reflect at night was a treat.

Day 48 – Another visit to the coffee shop to get our morning going well – I could see this becoming a bad habit. Then, we headed off for our long journey to the south. We are trying to get through as many miles as we can at the moment – meaning less nights on the road = less money spent at campgrounds.

A few sites that we drove past were a few glaciers, one right outside of Anchorage was huge and a site of awe. The fall colours continue to paint our path east and south through the mountains. The boarder crossing was the simplest we’ve ever had and I think we should appreciate that since I don’t know if they will be as easy for the rest of our world trip.

Day 47 – Anchorage has a ton of coffee shops, just like Seattle – and for most of our stay here it was drizzly also – making it feel like Seattle was right around the corner. Unfortunately, that is not the case and Seattle is 2,252 miles away.

After a nice morning breakfast at the local coffee shop and some spending at the second-hand book store we toured the downtown a bit. Alison took us to a great movie house that had a restaurant instead of a concession stand and the theater had tables in front of all the seats. Dinner and a movie all in one, and I must say dinner was amazing. Their garlic treats were delicious – flour tortilla with melted cheese, garlic (I think they used at least a clove per square inch) and jalapeños; it was soooo good. The movie we watched was Murderball and I really enjoyed it – would suggest it to anyone.

Kate and Audrey – Alison’s really nice cats. Playing with them made me homesick for my cat, Mo.

Day 45/46 – We slept through a windy but dry night at Denali National Park and woke up early to start our trip up the dirt road and go as far as we can with the other lottery winners for today. The drive was smooth for a dirt road that is covered in snow for 2/3’s of the year and the animal sightings were abundant. Unfortunately, Jason and I only have our two eyes to use for looking at them, so a mama bear and her three cubs by the river – looked more like a fuzzy big brown oval and three little ones. Some people on this excursion were very serious with their super telephoto lens and climbing up on top of their camper cars to get pictures and viewings of the animals. It was exciting and I bet some really great pictures were taken.

The mountains started to clear up the closer we got to Wonder Lake and we snuck a mostly full view of it for a few moments before the clouds came back to cuddle around the top of Mt. McKinley again. It was a very beautiful ride of yellow leaves, colorful dirt and shrubbery – not to mention the snow covered mountains contrasting with brown ones in front. Thank you so much Sarah and Dan for giving us your ticket!!!

It took us about 8 hours of driving to complete the trip in and out – a long gorgeous day. We arrived at night to my friend Alison’s house in Anchorage.
