I’m Megamerican.

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

I’m reading the Act of Roger Murgatroyd by Gilbert Adair and it’s wonderful so far. There are tons of allusions to all the Agatha locked-room-Christmas-manor-type stories. I recommend it if you’re into murder mysteries – its very cute.

The SFGC has a new site up, with musica! Check it out! http://www.sfgirlschorus.org/ Awww… check out the quote; “As important to San Francisco as the Golden Gate Bridge” – Frederica von Stade.
Oh! And, “Only the highest standards of professional training can produce such voices” – Michael Tilson Thomas.
“There may be no better musical training outside of Vienna” – SF Magazine
Check out the video. I love watching the girls go from level 1 (where they can be a tad shreaky) to level 4 (with Beth and Susan!) where they sound absolutely gorgeous. Oh! And Barrie’s little sister is in the video. It makes me feel really old to know that most of the younger siblings have finished Chorissima by this point. (Oh – and I’m not a huge fan of the choreography at the Kyoto conference – that doesn’t really look up to the old standards, imho. Nice outfits, though). Ack – I have to get the new CD… It’s called Voices of Hope and Peace. Here’s the description; “Chorissima’s sixth solo CD, centers around a theme of longing for hope and peace in our world. The CD, recorded at Skywalker Sound Studios, is comprised entirely of texts by women and includes five pieces commissioned by SFGC. The centerpiece is a 25 minute work, Anne Frank: A Living Voice, written by composer Linda Tutus Haugen. The young women featured in this recording are approximately the same age as Anne Frank was when she wrote her diary. Their young voices give a special poignancy to the message for tolerance and peace.” You can check out snippets on itunes and here. Heres the listing on amazon.
To brag for just a moment; The ensemble can also be heard on several recordings with the San Francisco Symphony, including the GRAMMY® award-winning CDs Orff: Carmina Burana (1992); Stravinsky: The Firebird, The Rite of Spring, Persephone (1999); and Mahler: Symphony No. 3 and Kindertotenlieder (2004). Chorissima has appeared in two feature films, The Talented Mr. Ripley (2000) and What Dreams May Come (1998).   Hee.
Oh my god, I love this website I found. I’m supposed to be doing work, yet instead I’m finding all my favorite videos that Viacom took away. It’s a good way to spend a Sunday.

Even Stephvens Ooh – I love this one “I’m a correspondent”

Awwww…. You’d almost feel sorry for Italy if the All Blacks weren’t so FUCKING HARDCORE!

That’s right – we won 76-14. Almost as many points as minutes in the game. And Herdis and I went to Sullivans to watch, which was a lot of fun (although the Guiness there was terrible – I switched to Kilkenny for the second half). But they had a band playing there called… wait for it…. the black velvet band. Ba dum dum. And yes, they did play that, along with other Irish faves (Tell me ma, whiskey in the jar, Dirty old town, etc.), a bagpipe song at one point (I’m still deaf), and some Clash, Violent Femmes, etc. And they played Gaelic Storm during set breaks. The bar itself was like Carrols threw up on it (they had the 1916 proclamation up by door – no really). But it was definitely fun, since we got good music along with the game.

BTW – I was expecting it to be more like when Ireland was playing 6 Nations, where every bar was jammed, but I think that’ll only really happen once the All Blacks are in the Finals. Yes, we got some cheering for the Haka and the first couple of scores (which would be minutes 1 and 3) but once it became clear how one-sided the whole match would be, most people didn’t really pay attention.

In other news, Australia did the same thing to Japan, and England beat the US (28-10).
