Yup, it’s a lot.
I’m posting most of my stuff now, but I’ll probably have some more to post this evening.
I cannot be trusted in a video store. I went in to see if they had Dreamland (an indie that looks as if it might be along the lines of Lawn Dogs) and ended up with 4 other films. *sigh*. Watched dodgeball last night with the housemates (DON’T JUDGE ME) and while Ben Stiller does not know when to stop in that one, there is something really funny about watching Justin Long being hit with a ball about 50 times in a row. (Favorite lines? “We’ll seperate the awkwardly feminine from the possibly Canadian.” & “I sure do like Pumpkins” – Jason Bateman)
I didn’t get anything productive done last night, but I did have Mexican for dinner. Mmmm.
My mom passed along some of the political stuff I had posted (under “from my daughter, who’s a pinko, liberal, environmentalist, vegetarian tree-hugger. And maybe worse!”) One of her friends wrote back, “Once again you have started my day in the LEFT direction and I thank you again for that…this will indeed be passed to many people….oh yes, you really made two fine kids, thank them for all their insights and musings”
Also – there’s a great doonesbury here. I suppose I have less of a problem with Republicans who truly believe in fiscal responsibility (rather than caring more about boys gettin’ hitched out in SF over their own civil liberties, health care, and social welfare). However, how stupid do you have to be to actually truly believe that a republican administration stands for fiscal responsibility anymore? That leaves the republicans who are in it for their tax cuts, and I find them morally reprehensible. Albeit, the most logical thinking of the bunch.
Have I ever told the story about the time my editorial supporting Gore for the presidency got passed from person to person until it reached a law firm in Florida where it (allegedly and according to my headmaster) convinced 40 people there to go out vote for Gore? Now if only it could have re-enfranchised (is that a word?) the 40,000 people wrongly enrolled as convicted felons, maybe we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in today…
I was supposed to have plans for this weekend, but I’m feeling a bit blah. And like I need to really, really fix some stuff on my laptop. And go to the freaking gym already. I was thinking about watching Canterbury play tonight, but I think instead I’ll watch the All Black’s first match of the World cup (tomorrow, versus Italy, 11:35pm).
BTW – the current IRB standings are: New Zealand (1st), Australia, France, South Africa, Argentina, Ireland. The US is 15th (of 20). It should be a really fun cup, seeing as I’ve cheered on Ireland and South Africa in the past (and there’s an Argentinian in the house who knows some professional rugby players).
EW has a photo gallery on the front page of shocking moments in TV, including the first gay kiss on network, which I remember because it was, shockingly, only in 2001. (No – I wasn’t watching Dawson’s Creek as a tv program, but someone got that episode and brought it in).
Interesting comment; Daniel Radcliffe was talking about bringing Equus to B’way and he said he was scared about it because he thinks NY audiences are more discerning than London. Is that true, do you think? So many of the big hits play both. I can’t think of any off the top of my head that were huge hits on one and failed to cross over, whereas I beleive thePillowman, Moon for the Misbegotten and History Boys were each big hits (or at least critically well-received) in both.
Sadness about Pavorotti. Although it is impressive he made it to 71, given his ill-health. I’ll have to go listen to some Nessun Dorma after work today.
There are 2 early test screenings for Leatherheads up on AICN. I hope this one does well – in part because it sounds like it has similar comic sensibilities to O Brother Where Art Thou, and in part becuase I’d really like to see John Krasinski make it in movies. Plus, so far I’ve loved both of George Clooney’s directorial efforts, and so if the film ends up being half as great as COnfessions of a Dangerous Mind, I’ll probably like it (Renee Zellwegger aside).
Apparently, they showed a song from Sweeny Todd at Tim Burton’s lifetime acheivement award ceremony in Venice, and the review is awesome. I can’t wait!!
News from Cinematical: “Back in July, I alerted you to the news that Keira Knightley signed on to play Georgiana Cavendish, the 18th century Duchess of Devonshire in an upcoming flick called The Duchess. Now Variety is reporting that Lord Voldemort -aka- Ralph Fiennes, Dominic Cooper of The History Boys, and Cassandra’s Dream co-star Hayley Atwell have also signed on to the film that starts shooting on the 23rd in the UK. Fiennes will play the Duke of Devonshire, Cooper will be Georgiana’s lover, Earl Grey, and Atwell will take on the role of her best friend, Lady Bess Foster. And yes, this Earl Grey is the man linked to the tea. Georgina’s life was pretty wild — affairs, lovers, and messed-up marriages, so this could be one fun flick.” Hotness. Dominic Cooper was awesome in the History Boys.
“Variety has also posted that Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci’s Penelope is finally coming out in theaters. Summit Entertainment has picked up the North American rights, and it will be released on February 1. You might remember that IFC and the Weinsteins nabbed the rights in Toronto last year, set it up for release in April, and then stopped it all to focus on “its core business of smaller-budget indies.” You’d think they could’ve at least put out what they’d purchased. Luckily, Summit head Rob Friedman says: “It is the kind of material that will allow our marketing group to really shine,” and it looks like its time has finally come. (Crosses fingers.) While we wait, you can check out Kim’s review here, and the trailer here.” Yay. I want to see this. Speaking of thin British boys, I’m pretty sure this is the one with James MacAvoy.
Sleuth got a good review on Cinematical (mostly, good actors, good director – Kenneth Branagh). I didn’t realize that Pinter did the screenplay though… I liked his French Leiutenant’s Woman, but I absolutely hate his original stage work (or what I’ve seen of it).
Great headline for the day: “Ryan Phillipe to star in Viking epic.” Heh. heh. Hahahaha.

Keira Knightley will be a good costume heroine when she stops looking as if she’s ON heroin, and gains 50 pounds.
