Most helpful rtw planning book

In my initial excitement about this trip, I bought a lot of rtw travel planning books. But really if I could go back in time, I would only buy one book: The Practical Nomad by Edward Hasbrouck.

I, unfortunately, didn’t realize that a new version was coming out in September, so I have the old version. But the practical tips, advice, and information in this book have been really helpful. It was a good place to start our planning, and I find myself returning to it as I learn new things to reread it and put what I know now in context of what the book says. This book has been an excellent source for our low-budget, independent travel planning.

Here are some of the other books I bought that might help explain why The Practical Nomad was the best book for us.

Traveler’s Tool Kit by Rob Sangster
This book seemed more for people who were going to travel on a bigger budget than we have. It seemed more for family travel or just in general visiting a foreign country for the first time. More suitcase/hotel/guided tour trips rather than backpack/sleeping bag/wandering around trips like we’re interested in. But it does have a lot of information, just not right for us.

The World Awaits: How to Travel Far and Well by Paul Otteson
I can’t really put my finger on what wasn’t quite there for us with this book. I think it just wasn’t detailed enough. It seems more of a ‘get in the mindset to travel’ book instead of ‘I’m ready to go, please give me some practical information so I can do this’ book.

The World’s Cheapest Destinations by Tim Leffel
So, this book was actually really helpful for our initial push to choose destinations. I recommend it if you’re on a tight budget. The only downfall was that I shouldn’t have bought it. It’s a good book to read through (it’s short and easy to read) to narrow down your destination choices or get some new ideas on destinations, but once I read it I was done with it. It just wasn’t a good purchase.

Those are the main rtw-specific books I’ve read. There are lots more, but once I got into The Practical Nomad, I really stopped looking.

But don’t take my word for it!

Gina.
