Day 1: Phedi to Landruck
– Annapurna Sanctuary Trek –
I depart Pokhara in a taxi around 8am, accompanied by a group of four Europeans, an Israeli and an Nepalese trekking guide. Shortly, we arrive at Phedi and begin the seven day trek into the Annapurna Sanctuary. Through multi-hued terraced farming communities and small villages in the hills we spend a full day hiking along rough dirt paths and up countless stone stairs.
Along the way we pass porters carrying back-breaking loads, Nepalese mountain farmers, the occasional cow, goats and a checkpoint where the Maoist Communist party asks for a donation to their ongoing military revolution. As it gets dark, we settle into a modest inn situation in the village of Landruck. A long day of intense hiking puts us all to sleep relatively early.
