7 Days in Tibet: Day 5

. Drive to Rongpu Monastery .

As instructed by our driver, we awake around seven in the morning for the trip to Mt. Everest and are scolded for being a little bit late again by a blaring horn that wakes everybody in the overpriced hostel.  The group’s tolerance for this driver’s attitude and lack of any guidance from the “guide” (from now on referred to as the overpaid translator who doesn’t know the name to the towns or natural wonders that we passed.) begins to fade as we gain altitude, approaching the tallest Mountain in the world.

Once again, our van proves to be a snail on the rugged paths towards the Rongpu Monastery.  After a stop for lunch in one of the Tibet’s Himalayan Mountain Hamlets, we finally make it to our destination… too late to catch sunset on the famous peak.  The high altitude and late season make the outdoor temperatures unbearable.  A group of travelers and local Tibetans crowd the common room to soak up the only source of heat for miles… a yak/goat-dung burning stove!  Eventually everybody returns to their un-heated rooms to sleep, fully clothed in Mountain Gear and buried under four heavy blankets.
