So finally some pictures of the city I call home! These were all taken while mum was still here… [read on]

Computer Geeks

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

So my jumpdrive decided to die on me. It claims it’s been write protected, although according to the software, the drive is not write protected. It lies! Anyway, the story got interesting when I overheard a New Zealand guy talking to a girl while we were all waiting in line (queue) for a computer in the library.

“Oh don’t worry, I’m a computer geek, I’ll figure it out.”

They went off to their computer, and I went off to mine, and when I noticed that my jump drive wasn’t working again, I decided to hell with it…

“Hi, sorry to bother you, but I overheard you say you were a computer geek. Is that true?”

The guy blushed, laughed a nervous laugh, and punched his friend in the shoulder in embarrassment. “Yeah”

I explained my dilemma and he told me he’d be over in a second to help me.

He couldn’t find the problem, so my jump drive is still being an dick (as so many Kiwis seem to like to use this word).

Am I ever going to have a normal interaction with a New Zealander?

Today in our Maori class, the one about the origins of the Polynesians, we were discussing linguistics. Crazy to think New Zealand is a different dialect from American English, and each of these English dialects branch off. CRAZY!

Laundry

Saturday, July 16th, 2005
I did my laundry today, and when I got to the laundry area, there were no free washers. A guy was standing waiting for one to finish. When it did finish, he opened the lid, and looked inside, stepped back, ... [Continue reading this entry]

Unconditional Love

Wednesday, July 13th, 2005
I think I would like to report that this afternoon, for the first time since I arrived on this island, I felt fully comfortable with everything, with my decisions in coming here. I felt almost at home you might say ... [Continue reading this entry]

First Day of Classes and an Innapropriate Conversation

Monday, July 4th, 2005
HAPPY FOURTH! First day of classes went well. I met one Kiwi in my Maori studies class, she seems like a cool person. My cognitive psychology professor is either American or Canadian and has the most obnoxiously inflected way of talking. ... [Continue reading this entry]

Ode to the All Blacks

Sunday, July 3rd, 2005
The All Blacks slaughtered the Lions, again. 48:18 I believe, effectively winning the series and giving all of New Zealand an excuse to drink, a lot. And maybe I should mention also that it gave the Brits an excuse to ... [Continue reading this entry]

LIONS v ALL BLACKS The Second Test

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005
This entry is basically only to say that after the nature reserve, we drove to Wellington. It's also to inform you that I'll write about our arrival in Wellington at a later date, because right now I need to go ... [Continue reading this entry]
