March 29, 2005Day 168: Kepler Track
After being pampered on the boat, we put on our boots again and decided to do a bit of the Kepler track, normally a three day hike. We took the car to the Control Gates, and had a look at the lake, mirroring the sky above. We also saw red and white mushrooms. We walked over the Control Gates, which control the flow of water from Lake Te Anau to the Waiau river. The walk went through fairly level terrain, within an old forest, where moss covered the fallen trees and fungus grew in all colours and shapes. You could catch glimpses of the turquoise river, as we were for the most part following its course. At Rainbow Reach, we crossed the creaky swingbridge and had our sandwiches. We didn't see many people (apart from a few guys with guns!), it was very peaceful. We went back the same was and arrived back at the car. As we had no idea of the time, we were astonished that we had managed to walk 21.8 km in 5.5 hours, including breaks! My feet hurt a little, but I wasn't feeling too bad - Keiron will make a tramper of me yet! In the evening we had pasta Alfredo and I read Australian Women's Weekly until Dougies light gave out.
