A Family Outing In India

If you haven’t already, take a look at our last update on India.

Meeting Up
Rupert writes
Time was pressing upon us, unfortunately, and it was time to leave sleepy Jaisalmer and begin our epic of an twenty six hour journey to Mumbai. Foolishly – because we never learn – we booked a twelve hour sleeper-bus to Ahmedabad for our first leg. Nothing pleases me more than knowing I’ll never put myself through another one of those body twisting, gut curling, marathons again (although this wasn’t to be our last sleeper-bus experience). Sleep is rarely an option. In fact the only real attraction that kept us coming back – and dragging my dad and sister with us once – was having our own private, curtain drawn space above the usual seating, which would have been dealt as a high card had it not been for the bum leaving the private abode on every corner and (there were many) sections of the road that had apparently been forgotten about since the road workers dusted off their hands with a job well done, leaving it very incomplete and certainly not well done.

Tata India

January 5th, 2006

Rupert writes
A NOTE ON THIS WRITE-UP: So as not to throw your mind into a hurricane of confusion, thrashing madly like a dog chained to the blades of helicopter, eating at the links in desperation, until finally machine wins over living blood, I’ve simplified this gloriously long write-up by splitting each section (or place visited, as the case not just maybe, but is) into pages. At the bottom of the page you will note, with simple observation -I’ll trust you have, or else not worthy to continue- page numbers for your wildly dancing cursor to be calmed and pointed at for one smooth left-click to finish the job.

Of course we’re going to tell you all about India; that you could believe otherwise is like a camel riding over me whilst I sleep sound in the cool desert. Buried and winded I cry out for help, but nothing is heard through the blasting wind… slowly I sink into the endless sea of dunes. We hold for a moment on a desertlet dune. Then my hand reaches out in one last thrust and – Oh! The irony! – a close-up of my fingers releasing the write-up; the write-up of India I was delivering to you as you struck me down with your savage, merciless distrust.

(P.S – Unashamedly stolen and adapted from a Mil Millington email. I hoping if I give him all the praise – and I do – he wont come hunting for me)

Darjeeling

The stunning view from the roof-top terrace of Hotel Aliment

After eating what appeared to be a reasonably nice vegetable curry in a cafe just outside the New Jalpalguri Train Station we decided we were now ready to get the four hour jeep to Darjeeling.

“I’ll just pop to the toilet before we leave” I said, and made my way to the back of the restaurant, where I was confronted with a bleak looking wall with a run down door-way appearing from it. Unfortunately I decided to look inside. Big mistake. It was the kitchen. Certainly not quite the hygiene I was hoping for.

Chiang Mai – a rather late entry!

December 17th, 2005

PICT2362

I guess I’ve just been enjoying myself far to much to have even contemplated writing an update on this one. Boo-hiss!

We were very much looking forward to arriving in Chiang Mai not only to see the back-packers mecca of the north but Read the rest of this entry »

Quick Mad One From Jaipur

December 10th, 2005

Rupert writes
Three minutes untill the Internet Cafe closes so here we go…

We’re alive, although madly tired as we’re dashing through India at a rate of notts (yes, but how many? I never understood that phrase). We leave for Jodhpur tomorrow evening after a spin around the city in a Autorickshaw (not actually driving it myself, that would be sucide).

We’re missing out Pushkar and Ajmer, unfortunately. But we feel Jaisalmer will offer the tranquility and awesomeness we’re in search for. We’ll be staying three or four days in Jaisalmer as we’re running faster than camels through the rest of Rajastan (not how it’s spelt I doubt). Jaisalmer is the place I’ve had my eyes on since the urge to come to India invaded my day dreams.

Just been told we’re closing now so it’s goodbye and we’ll update you all soon!

KolKata
It’s changed it’s name but it hasn’t changed it’s nappy. Kolkata is as dirty as we were warned (every traveller we spoke to had the same story to tell), but it’s character, charm and endless smiling faces hide the littered streets -that look like the day after Glastonbury Festival- with potent ease.

The River Wild

December 2nd, 2005

PICT2216

BOOM!!! We drop off a rock and into what Toe, our guide, calls a “hole in the river”, where the current is being twisted and turned so it’s just fighting against itself and thus creates a whirl pool effect – not a time to fall out of the raft. “Forward paddle!” shouts Toe from the rear as we launch ourselves into the next drop. Unfortunately half of us, including me, weren’t entirely sure what he’d said, so paddled like we were tickling the river until his next scream of command; “GET DOWN!”. “I know what that means” I thought, as I duck into the raft and hang on with the biggest grin on my face – soon to be met with a face full of river water. Not So Lazy Anymore!

November 15th, 2005

Rupert writes
In fact we’re so far from lazy we’re having too much of a crazy time to update the blog. Today we were zooming around on quad bikes, and those who are waiting up day and night (eyes peeled back with tape) for a full update will have to wait until we’re back in Vientaine, after our two days of taking on class IIII rapids on the Mekong River. We can’t wait to fall in!

And last but certainly not least…

::: HAPPY BIRTHDAY To Laura’s Mum, Julie, and Laura’s Grampy, Eddie! :::

One Of Those Brief Updates. This One’s From Laos.

November 7th, 2005

We’ve been incredibly lazy over the last four days and spent a lot of time doing very little with a huge success rate. However the nothingness was broken up a little with eating times and our proud accomplishment of arranging our visas for India today, which means we don’t have to hang around Chiang Mai for longer than we want to. This means we now aim to be in India by the end of November, giving us five to six weeks to explore the exceedingly large country.

Between A Rock And A Hard Place

Halong Bay
Halong Bay has three thousand islands. Whether that’s an estimate or they went around and counted every one of them I’m not sure, but if it’s the latter then it make this Unesco World Heritage site even more of a natural marvel than it already is, and the Vietnamese incredibly anal. But who can blame them if they are; this place demands to be explored, the islands close proximity of each other creates a mystical adventure -straight out of an Enid Blyton book- feeling.
