West Bound & Down

Loaded Up and Truckin

Today begins the $20 experiment. Nothing I'm carrying, except my cellphone, cost more than $20 brand new. Including my brand new 42 litre pack ($19.88). In fact, I didn't even pack it all.

I bought a lot of shit at Wal-Mart. And don't give me any of your anti-Wal-Mart clap-trap. They're the best corporate citizen we have in this town, and the new super Wally World spurred a develpment mini-boom that provided more new jobs than any other event in the last 10 years. They may not be great by Boston or Connecticutt standars, but they're better than being unemployed--a major problem here.

So,

  • 2 bucks/pr for new undies (so's if I have and accident I won't be emabarrassed at the ER).
  • 14 bucks for 6 pairs of coolmax socks (not bringing them all.)
  • New t-shirts for $4 per (thanks Foot-locker).
  • A 16 dollar digital camera that takes perfectly blog-worthy snapshots (who needs 5 mega-pixel masterpieces of me drooling into my beer, anyway).
  • I didn't buy new pants, but I could've for less than 20 bucks/pr (why are they pair -- I have 2 legs, two cheeks 2, ahem, but only one waist (singularly large) and one, ahem-ahem.
  • 20 bucks for a new swiss army knife (plus 20 to fedex it to and from Portland -- probably an extravagance, but I feel lost and empty w/out it, and I ain't checking luggage this trip.)

No more than 20 bucks woth of toiletries, but I don't suppose that counts. Probably way more than 20 bucks worth of pills, but its a lot more expensive to drop dead...

The ubiquitous (ridiculous) $25 boots will be making the trip as well.

Of course I wouldn't go RTW with all this cheap shit, but I ain't going RTW. And I spend a lot more time going RTUSA.

Stay tuned for low-res pix of my low-res gear as it unravels, falls apart and leaves me carrying what's left home in a Piggly-Wiggly sack, and to...

Hey EB,

Sounds like you're ready to hit the road.

Walmart is the bomb, I don't care what people might say. Payless too. Why spend $75 bucks on a pair of shoes, you can get for 14.99.

Have a wonderful trip and an awesome birthday....40 is not old....I'll be 44 on my next birthday and don't feel old.

Cheers.

Socal -- Portland was great. I'm easing back into TX with a couple of days in Austin and a couple in San Antonio. Then back to reality where I get ready to teach 7th grade Texas History. Woo-hoo! Remember the Alamo! etc...

Hey EB,

Did Sean take you to the Tin Shed for breakfast? Did he get the garlic burrito and make the grunting noices while eating it? I got the biggest kick out of that.

We do tell are you going to give up a report of your Portland trip? We'd love to hear it. All the sorted details too, who was drunk, any flirting going on, bootbus stories, everything!

Did you fly ? or drive?

Cheers.
