December 21, 2003Guidebooks
I've read a lot of guidebooks lately, which puts me in a position throw out my opinion, for whatever its worth. The Insight Guides are pretty, but light on my kind of budget-travel info. Rough Guides are good, but very UK-centric, which is fine considring that's where they are published. Which leaves the Lonely Planet guides, which combine a lot the Rough Guide sensibility with some of the Insight frills like glossy pics here and there. I especially like the Lonely Planet Vietnam. Having sort of diss'd Rough Guides, let me add that the Rough Guide First Time Asia was a good Asia primer. It helped me change my mind about a couple of things and confirmed a few more. I also like the Rough Guides practical estimates of the costs of a particular trip. Not that this info is impossible to otherwise calculate, but it is a convenient way to put a number in mind while browsing. Comments
Hard for me to relate to a rich lawyer, but I llike your blog, really sorry to hear your not taking off on your travels for the long haul but your itinerary sounds interesting. My ex-wife's (now) rich lawyer took care of that little, err.., problem. Now I'm just a poor schoolteacher. Jennifer - I've sorta gathered that abut the LP guidebooks... maybe they should change the name to the More-Lonely-Than-A-NY-Subway-But-Otherwise-Fairly-Crowded Planet Guidebooks. heheh. Bob - err,uh, thanks mate. Its been my experience that hookers find *me*. I must have that couldn't-get-shagged-in-a-tantric-sex-convent look about me. Fortunately for me, looks are deceiving and sex tourism isn't my agenda. -eb Posted by: EB on December 27, 2003 11:34 AM |
