135: Vrrooom…

Picked up my car today from the Rental Company and it was quite nice to drive a car again after more than 4 months.

I couldn’t resist the temptation of a special deal on a 4WD SUV and got myself a Ford Territory.
I probably just keep it for a week or so (hear, hear) and then swap it for a cheaper one but I felt like having a bit of fun driving a SUV and the price I got is a real bargain 🙂

I looked around quite a bit to find good deals and thought about using a campervan but in the end I decided against it since I can’t see myself driving a big chunky campervan around the country..

Cheap reantal cars start around NZ$ 30 for ~8-10 year old cars (the have Nissan Bluebirds would you believe it) but descent ones are around NZ$ 45. I did make the mistake to ask for 4WD prices too though and while most were about twice as much as the descent regular cars, Hertz had a nice Ford Territory which was only 5 pounds more a day..

Touring
Heading off down to Bay Peninsula off Christchurch tomorrow and then continue down south along the east coast.

Weather has been fairly wet as it has been raining everyday since I arrived in Christchurch, to a more or lesser extent but I was told forecast for next week is good.. Let’s hope so..

Shopping
I did have to buy some descent waterproof boots though since my Merrell’s aren’t waterproof and wearing waterproof trousers and gaitors drowns them in no time with all the water running of the waterproofs into the shoes 😉

I now am also in possession of a cheap sleeping bag so I can sleep in the car if needed but I reckon mostly I will seek out youth hostels which, according to charlie, are plenty and of very good standard througout the country.

Oh and I bought two little field guides about New Zealand Birds, better make sure I see some now… 😉

have been reading too much about the southern island around Steward Island and beyond and REALLY want to go there now since there are massive wildlife sancturaries for birds, seals etc. I read there is one island where at breeding times they have up to 5 million birds in the air.. WOW!
