The end of book one

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Just as Michael Corleone  in the Godfather part 1, as Mad Max at the end of Mad Max 1, as Axel Foley in Beverly Hill’s Cop 1, as Luke Skywalker at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope, as Danny Ocean at the end of Ocean’s Eleven, and most likened to us, as Troy Bolton from High School Musical 1, we are, just as all of these long living and most important fictional characters did, leaving S.E. Asia and going to Australia as of 20:15 today.

I was going to write a proper entry about us leaving, but everything came out sounding over sentimental and cheesy, I feel that by comparing myself to things that don’t exist you, the dear reader, can impose your own image of our departure firmly in your mind. Hum the music from The Hulk T.V. series as you do, the sad sounding classical piece where Dr. Banner walks away from the camera, turning back every now and then to wave goodbye. Goodbye Asia, Goodbye!

Very few pics of Nam and Bodia

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Sadly, getting anything resembling decent internet speeds in Cambodia is a bit like (insert funny impossibility of your liking here) as a result, the pics are few and aren’t our favourite, just the ones that happened to be first on my camera and therefore downloaded within the first 30 mins of sitting looking at a black friggin screen!

1. Us with our traditional Kramar scarfs in Cambodia, we were on our way down a dusty, dirty road to the Killing Fields.

2. Self explanatory sign at the killing fields, didn’t feel right to take photo’s of a mountain of skulls or actual mass graves, you know?

3. The Cu Chi Tunnels just outside of Siagon in Vietnam. Only one of these men are real.

4. Cu Chi Tunnels again, this time, Lauren has brought a tank for the class to see

5. Cu Chi Tunnels, me, a tank.

6. Cu Chi Tunnels again, our tour guide showing us some sort of GI killing device. I’m nearly sure it’s not a bomb. My reckoning says that it was used to drop/swing onto unsuspecting squaddies, probably at head height.

Seedy Saigon

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008
After harping on about Vietnam's greatness for the past month or so, it was a genuine disappointment to find Saigon to be, well, gross. The area we stayed in, I forget the name and don't have my Lonely Planet to ... [Continue reading this entry]

Acts of Atrocity and Big Dissapointments

'This has been the best week of our trip,' Lauren and I both agreed as we left Nha Trang, and it had, we really enjoyed our time teaching. I couldn't wait to get some pictures up to show you all ... [Continue reading this entry]

Take me down to Ho Chi Minh City

Saturday, September 13th, 2008
After a great time in Nha Trang, we have arrived at our final destination in Vietnam - Siagon. Our last day in Nha Trang was really awesome, we taught in the morning, and one of the students (who ... [Continue reading this entry]

And breathe…

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
Ok, so I have calmed down from earlier. If we weren't teaching here in Nha Trang I really don't know what we'd be up too. There's diving, but from what I can tell it's nothing to write home about, there's drinking, ... [Continue reading this entry]

Feeling Appreciated

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
After some good classes, I sat down with the kids for a 'free' lunch, I had been told it was free numerous times, and as the kids didn't have to pay, I assumed I didn't either because I have now ... [Continue reading this entry]

Helping more in Nha Trang

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
Teaching is going absolutely fantastic, it is rife with difficulty though, especially as within one class you can have near fluent speakers alongside people who can't say simple sentences (a slight exaggeration but it gets the point across.)  The classes ... [Continue reading this entry]

Sitting on the other side of the teacher’s desk

Saturday, September 6th, 2008
Our volunteering has seen out the end of the week brilliantly. Brian, the dentist from Brighton, sadly leaves for Hong Kong on Sunday and so on his last lesson on Friday, all the students gave little speeches and Brian had ... [Continue reading this entry]

Volunteering in Nha Trang

Thursday, September 4th, 2008
After accumilating yet another round of fresh bruises from the bumpy, 12 hour  ride to Nha Trang, we got ourselves booked into a $7 a night mini hotel. Upon awaking at around midday, we made a beeline for a place called ... [Continue reading this entry]
