The end of book one

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Just as Michael Corleone  in the Godfather part 1, as Mad Max at the end of Mad Max 1, as Axel Foley in Beverly Hill’s Cop 1, as Luke Skywalker at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope, as Danny Ocean at the end of Ocean’s Eleven, and most likened to us, as Troy Bolton from High School Musical 1, we are, just as all of these long living and most important fictional characters did, leaving S.E. Asia and going to Australia as of 20:15 today.

I was going to write a proper entry about us leaving, but everything came out sounding over sentimental and cheesy, I feel that by comparing myself to things that don’t exist you, the dear reader, can impose your own image of our departure firmly in your mind. Hum the music from The Hulk T.V. series as you do, the sad sounding classical piece where Dr. Banner walks away from the camera, turning back every now and then to wave goodbye. Goodbye Asia, Goodbye!

Went to Raffles, forgot what it was they were famous for, ended up having a beer.

‘Course not, I had a Sing Sling!

Had a lovely evening wandering around the Chinatown and city center areas of Singapore. We got the super sweet MRT- bit like  new age version of the London underground- to Chinatown station and walked back through the city towards Little India. Found some awesome spots along the river where Lauren and I took a romantic stroll through gently-lit neon walkways with the reflection from the river serving to make it more wonderful. I’ll admit, it made me feel a bit lovey-dovey. (Although anyone who knows me and Lauren knows that we take any excuse to be a bit lovey-dovey!)

Got to Raffles. It looked expensive and quiet. It is a Sunday night after all, but there were only a few other couples sitting around the bar and a group of 6 at a table nearby. We were the youngest drinkers by at least 30 years. Brilliantly, just before we left, a trio came in, one of whom was a western man wearing teeny-tiny shorts, white running shoes, and pulled up, pristine white sport socks. I was agog.

So we had our Singapore Sling in Raffles. It came to a whopping $51.80 for two and the man gave a little chuckle when we asked for the bill after one drink. Although I highly doubt we are the first backpackers to do this (nor the last,)  I have a theory that Lauren’s fake Rolex made the waiter think we actually did have some cash. Lauren really enjoyed her drink, she isn’t really a fan of the Sling, but she said this was delicious. I thought it was a little meh. It was alright-ish, although I was half expecting a smoking chalice filled with unicorn blood for the asking price.

Deepevali made going to the night zoo tonight all but impossible, the streets were so packed in Little India that it reminded me of various music festivals. It being a non-Catholic religious festival though, there was no quaffing of alcohol. Even now the streets are packed but there is no drunken tomfoolery, just the good natured wholesomeness of a Dick Van Dyke T.V. show. The reason we couldn’t make it to the zoo is that every time a bus would pull into the bus stop, the streets were so packed that it was hard to tell where the bus stop ended and the crowds began. This on top of the fact that we needed to ask which bus to get meant that there was no chance of us finding the right one.

The lights and things do look amazing though, they line each main street of Little India and throughout the town you can hear small bangers and fireworks going off and women and little girls holding their hands up to let their new henna tattoos dry.  We’re both so glad that we were here to see this, it’s a good way to see of S.E. Asia.

Apologies for the somewhat erratic style tonight, I think the gin must have gone to my noggin!

Singapore…like being mugged by a very clean and tidy assailant.

Sweet baby heyzuse, the further down you go in S.E.Asia the more things cost. First of all there was the no air-con for under 20 squids in Malaysia (as opposed to the deal in Vietnam-see below) and now, in Singapore, ... [Continue reading this entry]
