Moving on down

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Another day another city on the horizon.  Today we leave the beautiful Hoi An in favour of Nha Trang, a seaside city around 500km south. Lets all cross our fingers that the big-bed bus turns up, huh?

Lauren’s birthday was good fun, we went for a romantic meal on a roof terrace. The food was top notch, with both of us opting for a particualrly un-adventurous Goat’s cheese and spinace lasagne. Cargo’s the place was called, would recommend the food if not really the service.  Three courses plus a gourde of wine and a few beers was a relatively cheap 15 quid. Not bad.

Then we moved on to a trendy bar down the way. The overall vibe of the bar, Zepplin/The Doors on the jukebox, Banksy style graffiti on the walls, ‘cool’ quotes scrawled on the toilet doors, was entirely ruined by a massive 8ft by 6ft homage to Bono. It depicted the tiny U2 goblin in a super man outfit, naturally the ‘S’ of the superman was altered to say U2 and next to him was the word the word ‘SuperBono.’ Horrendus. We did bump into Danny and his girlfriend Nat, we met Danny in Hue, though and they joined us for the rest of the evening’s drinks. It’s really good to be well away from the Ra’s of Thailand, we have yet to really see any ‘backpackers’ in their teens here in ‘Nam  and instead there is generally a much more mature, cooler atmosphere.

All in all, Lauren had a great day, we are picking up her dress later and we got a sneak preview last night, it looks beautiful on her.

Plenty more thumb-twiddling is bound to ensue as we wait for our bus, which should arrive in about 4 hours, to Nha Trang.

Lauren’s Birthday and never underestimating the kindness of strangers

Monday, September 1st, 2008

So the big day is here. It is around 3ish in the afternoon here and Lauren is on the phone to various family members. I think there may even be a surprise guest entry from the birthday girl herself on this very blog later, so keep eyes peeled.

So far today we have visited one of the many tailor shops that Hoi An is famous for and Lauren has been fitted for a beautiful dress. The process was real fun, with Lauren looking through swathes of celebrity magazines and finally deciding on a Cameron Diaz number. Then came picking materials and fabrics, another interesting even considering the shop is kitted out with 100+ different shades and patterns. I won’t go into too much detail because I’m sure Lauren will be excited to explain it all.

Today is our last day in Hoi An and for Lauren’s birthday we are going to get her a manacure/pedicure, a massage, and then to a really nice looking sushi restaurant (and some fizzy wine) later tonight. I’m really happy as Lauren seems to be having a wonderful day so far.

Mae, the lady who runs our hotel, and her staff were very sweet to Lauren this morning. She greeted us with big smiles and gave Lauren a single red rose and a birthday card. It was incredibly thoughtful and on this kind act alone will be recommending the Vinh Huy Hotel to our fellow travellers heading north.

I must admite I’m not overly looking forward to our trip to Nha Trang tommorrow, it’s 12 hours long on a sleeper bus and while it won’t be the 17 hour uber-marathon from Hanoi to Hue, it will still be uncomfortable enough should the bus turn up with barely enough legroom for a midget.

Vietnam and me: Full Agreement

Sunday, August 31st, 2008
Something of a phenomenon, although I have been shouting it from the figurative rooftops for a very long time now, but locals all through Vietnam have been approaching Lauren to tell her how beautiful she is. At first Lauren thought ... [Continue reading this entry]

Busy little streets

Saturday, August 30th, 2008
Arrived in Hoi An without too much trouble. The sleeper bus that arrived to pick us up this time was, mercifully, fitted with beds big enough for me to lay down in almost flat. One interesting quirk in Vietnamese driving ... [Continue reading this entry]

Travelling- A bit like going from Basildon to Wickford by bus. 375 times.

Thursday, August 28th, 2008
For the cheap price of $22 (a lot of things are done in dollars out here in Vietnam,) we have bought ourselves some 'Open Ticket' bus tickets. This means that we can travel down Vietnam's east coast at our leisure, ... [Continue reading this entry]

Righting a wrong

Thursday, August 28th, 2008
Xe Om's are in fact motorbike taxis, the offspring of a couch and a bicycle that we rode in Hanoi is called a cyclo. Boring but important to rememeber the truth...

Hanoi, or ‘ohmygodweregunnagetrunover!!!’

Monday, August 25th, 2008
This is going to be a slightly longer post that usual... If Koh Tao is a lazy Sunday in a quiet pub in the countryside, gently sipping a nice ale with friends, then Hanoi is standing in Picadilly Circus when England ... [Continue reading this entry]
