The tuk-tuk game

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Hassle from Tuk-tuk drivers is near obligatory in SE Asia, more so in Cambodia than Vietnam, and more so in Vietnam than Thailand, (as far as I remember, Laos has the best  memories for being hassle free.)

It has taken 4 countries, but I’ve developed the tuk-tuk game for Lauren and I to play to help numb the raging anger that occurs when they begin their ‘Hello Sir!’ patter.

Similar to the people who email back the ‘African prince’s who must escape their country and so need your bank account to deposit $10000000000000000000, a percentage of which you can keep’ and try and get a good, if entirely imaginary, relationship going, so now do we.

The game is to see how many places you can get your would be tuk-tuk driver to try and entice you into his tuk-tuk with, you are not allowed to stop walking at any point, you must keep smiling. Lauren has averaged a good 2 while I’ve managed a whopping 5 from a plucky tuk-tuk driver who wanted to follow us down the road.

It may sound slightly cruel, but the amount of road I’ve been followed down by these pests could pave the way to London and back. At least now I’m smiling at them.

Siam Reap: our saviour of Cambodia

Friday, September 26th, 2008

I have made no effort to hide my disappointment with Cambodia.  Unfortunately, up until this point it just didn’t seem to offer what other traveler’s said it did. That is until we reached Siam Reap. The place is gorgeous, remarkably so, with great shopping and good bars. The place seems much more accessible, smaller, and less threatening, than Phnom Phenm, and therefore much more charismatic and likable.

The food here seems a little more Khmer than in the capital too, and tomorrow night after spending the day at Angkor Wat, I’m hoping to try out a feast of different meats –  yes, my nemesis the snake being included in this.

Last night we relaxed in a bar in the imaginatively named ‘Bar St.’ It was cheap and reasonably ambient. There was a point of near drama though when the waitress couldn’t accept my $10 note as payment because it looked ‘too old.’ I was flabbergasted, I’m aware that if a dollar note is ripped or torn in anyway they are liable to being rejected in Cambodia, but the $10 that I offered as payment was perfectly intact, just mysteriously too aged to be accepted. With enough smiling in Cambodia though, most things are easily sorted, and the waitress eventually accepted the money. Lucky really, I didn’t have any more on me.

Last night we ate in a rather posh looking ally of restaurants just off of Bar Street. While posh looking, and great tasting, the food is still only around $9 for the both of us, including beers. While we were eating, I was amazed at the table next to us. I mean, really, how did the old European with a horrific comb-over, paunched belly and painfully unstylish clothes manage to bag himself a much younger, well kept and flirtatious Cambodian lady? Answers on a postcard please.

Cambodia, finding it a little bit…meh

‘Are we missing something?’ The two of us mused as we sipped coffee earlier today. Nearly all of our friends that we have met who have included Cambodia in their itineraries have ranted and raved about it’s ‘chilled out vibe’ ... [Continue reading this entry]

Sihanoukville; Less Blood, More Aggro

Beach. That's basically Sihanoukville, the booming touriust spot on the south coast of 'bodia. While they are nice, white sand and relatively gentle crashing waves, the beach comes with more than it's fair share of annoyances too. Within seconds of sitting ... [Continue reading this entry]

Seedy Saigon

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008
After harping on about Vietnam's greatness for the past month or so, it was a genuine disappointment to find Saigon to be, well, gross. The area we stayed in, I forget the name and don't have my Lonely Planet to ... [Continue reading this entry]
