Petronas Towers, obligatory photographs and uber consumerism
Visited the Petronas Towers today, got that obligatory photo of the skybridge so that’s a big one off the checklist. Didn’t actually go up the skybridge though, theres all sorts of effort involved in that and the view from the KL tower (which we’re visiting tomorrow) is meant to be better.
Situated around the towers is the KLCC- a hyper mall with mainly upper -end fashion shops. The first one’s you see as you walk in are Prada and Chanel. This made me think that terrible thought that people in my soon-to-be-career (writing,) think. ‘Should I not just stop all this mucking about? go to London and get an interchangeable job in an interchangeable office just so I can go out and buy those lovely Hugo Boss shoes?’ The thought stayed with me the entire time at the mall, it’s like a hypnotic curse, the second we were out of earshot of the complex I could feel my own personality returning and that in fact, no, I don’t need to spend 300 quid on a pair of sunglasses.
Last night was good fun. The place we are staying, Wheelers, put on a free dinner. This is an obvious ploy to get guests up to the rooftop bar and spending money, and it worked. The dinner was pretty good, and we got talking to Lawrence (English) and his fiance Kasia (Polish) and two Polish newly weds out on their honeymoon. The drinks began flowing and we got talking to the group that was on our bus down from Cameron Highlands. One of the guys, John, was an ex-publishing agent. Admittedly it was for non-fiction, but he was more than happy to talk to Lauren and I about various aspects of getting an agent’s attention and what to expect etc. Was very informative. All of us ended up getting good ol’ drunk and returning to our rooms late into the evening. Was a lot of fun.
My major impressions of KL is that it doesn’t seem that different from a lot of other SE Asian megacities, with the exception that everyone here speaks English so it is marginally easier to get things done.
