Mosquitos!

August 30th, 2005

I’ve never been able to ascertain if my blood is especially tasty to mosquitos, or it’s just bad luck that I get bitten so much.
Right now…I’m itchy all over!

Things just get better and better…

August 27th, 2005

Well, now that you’ve all heard about my random, crazy day…I should say that things have calmed down.
I made it to Veliko Tarnovo in one piece…

Pretty little Veliko Tarnovo, the gorge that runs through town.

So the story goes…

August 26th, 2005

Tuesday…what a day. I’m finally ready to delve into the craziness that was Tuesday.
I guess, to be fair, the silliness started Monday night.
I stayed at the Funky Chicken hostel in Bucharest, where I met a bunch of fun people. Because they had a kitchen I decided to cook. Everyone chipped in and I got to work in the kitchen. Dinner came off pretty well, good enough to please 4 French guys…but this was just the start of the night…

Cheers and Congratulations!

August 24th, 2005

I just wanted to write some happy news I recieved a few days ago.
My friend Philip is now father to newly arrived Finn, born August 22nd in the wee hours of the morning. Big brother Max is, “being very grown up about things…” to quote Philip.
Congratualtions to the whole family!
You have been duelly toasted in Romania by a random group of travelers on the roof of the National Theatre.
Cheers and good health!
..and one more CONGRATULATIONS!

Sometimes things go awry…

August 24th, 2005

…and when they do they certainly have a way of doing it.
Rest asured I am well, in one peice, healthy and safe. Yesterday, though, was THE strangest day of my trip so far!
I haven’t the energy to get into all of it right now…I’m still trying to process how each and every turn was wrong. I made some new friends along the way though, so had people to laugh with when things went funny.
Let’s just say my day involved: Turkish Bulgarians with carpets, wrong trains, torrential rain, Cyrillic letters, and some very friendly Bulgarians who certainly eased the situations.
Oh yes…and then there is the matter of very tasty Chinese food…
But as I said…I’ll have to get back to this…

Turkish Bulgarian…notice the carpets, foreground and background…

A real highlight of the trip so far…

August 21st, 2005

Romania has been surprising me!
Yes, the country is gorgeous but it’s the people that have really been the highlight.

The supposed narrowest street in Eastern Europe

You say the train ride is how long?!?

August 18th, 2005

16 hours…oh…uh…okay. 😛
Yup, that’s right…16 hours to get from Budapest to Brasov, Romania in Transylvania. (That’s pronounced like Bra-shav…it’s actually gotta a thingy-ma-bob under the s, but I can’t type it.)

World traveller, not quite…

August 14th, 2005

So here’s a very broad map of the countries I’ve visited. It shades in the whole country red if you check the box which can be a bit misleading…like Canada, I’ve only been to Montreal.

So here I am, crazy travel girl by most friend’s estimations and there is so much of the world that’s still a pale, depressing grey.
I’m the first to admit I have traveled quite a bit, and that I’ve got the bug so I will continue to do so…but I’m hardly a world traveler…yet.
Truth be told, by the end of this trip, this map is going to look a bit different, a bit redder…but they’ll still be plenty of grey spaces to fill…

Oh, and for good measure…a states I’ve been to map. Got a lot of those to cross off too…

Write witty title here…

August 13th, 2005

I’ve not got one at the moment.
Just wanted to post a quick note and draw your attention to the fact that I’ve posted photos for my Eastern Europe leg so far, the past 5 entries (6 with this one.)
I’m in Budapest and being buddled in hospitality by the sweet Hungarians I’ve met. Really, the people here are SO nice!
So all is well…I’m digging the architecture and the wine, the people and, well, everything really.
BUT…my battery is officially dead on my laptop…need to recharge…
Cheers!

Another glass of red wine…
