Beind the times…Singapore pictures
It’s taken awhile but here they are, pictures from lovely Singapore.
I arrived in Singapore in the early morning and headed straight to a hostel, which was down the block from the amazing It loomed over my quiet street, attracting Ramadan crowds and tourists alike.
But it wasn’t the only impressive house of worship…there was an over-the-top within 5 minutes walk, in Little India. (and many more scattered around the city)
On my walk through Little India I ventured in and out of stores, entertained by a range of goods I’ve never seen before. There were beautiful fabrics and jewlery, strange fruits and vegtables, stacks of spices and little art shops carrying strange 3-D posters.
By all accounts, Singapore is a multi-cultural city, so my next stop was China Town
…quite a bit different from the one in NYC. Here there were more unusual shopping experiences, including fruit stands selling durian, a fruit so stinky it’s not allowed on the subway! …but then again, neither are a lot of things.
I thought I’d take a cruise along the river and try to beat the heat on one of the ancient little boats that ply the river.
We cruised along, passing Singapore’s impressive business district
…on the way to the harbor…home of the Merlion. What exactly is a merlion you ask? It’s half fish, half lion….of course. It’s also Singapore’s rather stange choice of a mascot, and you can see statues of it all over the city.
I strolled along the river bank, appreciating the juxtaposition of old and new…
…admiring statues that represent the old merchants of the city…
…and finally meeting Raffles himself, founder of the city.
That night I treated myself to a nice dinner, and tried a local bar. I met a ton of the city’s multi-culti inhabitants including friendly police men (despite the city’s stodgy reputation)…
before taking a trishaw home for the night. My driver was a little crazy but very nice and was happy to pose for a picture before heading off.
I took one more look at Sultan Mosque, more beautiful even at night, before heading to sleep. I had a plane to catch the next day…
