Survivor: Australian Outback
Well, sort of…anyway, Thursday, November 3rd, Shevahn and I drove about 5 hours to Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges. That night, we just had dinner at the lodge and relaxed. On Friday (the 4th) we were up early and went on a 4 wheel drive tour over and through the peaks of the Ranges. We saw the Arkaba Sheep Station and had views of the Elder Range, Moralana Valley, and Wilpena Pound. It was just the two of us on the tour so we had the boss’ Toyota Land Cruise. Not a bad way to go. Richard was our guide and we stopped for a picnic lunch and some Aussie Wine. Lemme tell you about the fliest though! They are very friendly. Like 10 of them will sit on your face. Ugh. Thankfully, Shev thought ahead and bought flynets. Well, we sure did use them!!! We saw wild emus, kangaroos, and some type of lizard-much bigger than Florida lizards!!!
On Saturday, Shevahn had a surprise for me (I knew about her having a surprise)…well we drove about an hour to this small town of Quorn and end up at the Pichi Richi Camel Tours. She had originally told me it had to do with an animal and I assumed a horse. Well, we did a 2 hour camel trek. Again, it was just me, Shevahn, and our guide Graham. They loosely tie the 3 camels together. It was Rex in the lead, me on Comanche in the middle, and Shevahn on Feral in the back. It was quite funny. They were all pretty well behaved except when Rex was being petulant. He was the “kid” of the bunch. The hardest part is when they stand up…you have to lean back and then forward again. I am sure it looked hysterical. I never realized how tall camels actually are!!! It was pretty awesome and again, some great scenery. After the ride, we tried to find something to eat and well, the town was quite quiet. I was waiting for either a tumbleweed or John Wayne to come strolling down the street. We found the General Store (really!) and grabbed something to eat and headed back to Adelaide. We got home and met up with Shev’s mum for dinner.
The rest of this week will be spent in and around Adelaide and I swear I will get pictures up next week. I think it will be easier to do in Melbourne…..well, that’s it for now….see ya!

Kristen –
Finally got a chance to read through your blog. Like everyone else, I’m insanely jealous of your travels! Don’t give a second thought to all of us slaving away at KW. The trip sounds awesome and the pictures you’ve posted are beautiful. Would love to see more. 🙂
Cheers!

Hey Kris(ten):
Sounds like you met a friend (Jacinta ? ) and I can just see you on camelback (is that like horseback?) What a treat that must have been. Definitely, something to write home about.
Things are “moving” along at KW — Barbie moved Dave’s office today (new carpet and all!). And I think Jon moved you too. It will be sooooo different when you come back. You’ll need a map to find everyone!
Anyway, I’m glad you’re having such a great vacation. You’ll have stories and photos to fill many a lunch hour when you get back. Can’t wait (but I’ll bet you can).
Keep up with the blog, Kristen. And let’s see some photos soon.
Love,
Barbara
