The Mekong

We woke early today and we had an 8 hour bus ride to Chau Doc, which is close to the Vietnam-Cambodia Border. I had my first experience of a squat toilet on the way….I won’t go into details here but it was interesting. Chau Doc is so pleasant compared to HCMC. Much slower pace and quieter. We did a cyclo tour around the city for an hour for $2USD. Only a few near death experiences:) Went to dinner and had stir fried pork and french fries. $4USD. Oh, btw, chicken is not on the menu AT ALL here. It is blacked out-you can’t order chicken or eggs. Tomorrow morning, we head to Cambodia.

    Hi there Kristen,

I can’t believe all of the things you’re seeing and doing. Amazing. It must have been very strange to be in Vietnam as the “only American.” I’m sure they (Viets) talked about the “crazy American lady” after you left.
The tunnels would have freaked me out! It’s terrifying to think that they lived in those tunnels for months at a time. I’ve read some of the stories about the GIs who had to go down there to find the Viet Cong (tough!)
Your mother will be upset when she reads about the motorcycle bit 😉 Fun though.
I’m glad you’re enjoying all the wonderful and strange sights and sounds.
Stay safe and have fun (is that an oxymoron?)
    Best,
    Barbara
