opening our eyes before leaving home

Monday, May 5th, 2008

The pile is dipped into – everyone has to find something they didn’t know or something interesting…..then we share what we’ve discovered with everyone else. What some of the smaller kids come out with is nothing short of fascinating! They might not be able to read, but they often see details in photos that the bigger ones of us skip right over.

The books go back to the library. And we get another pile to dip into. Everyone finds something……

eights kids eight kms two ticks

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Ticked off the To Do List……make sure everyone can walk ?????km. We don’t actually have a set amount, but we did eight kilometres today and everyone down to T3 managed it without a murmur, so we’re a few steps closer. In another month or so we’ll be doing the Coast to Coast, which is 16km, so perhaps that’s our goal.

Also ticked off today…….well, not exactly ticked off, but one of our goals is to make sure the kids will try anything foodwise. Out of eight, we only have one who can be a bit reticent about really hot curries, and the smallest one does not do bland. Other than that, they give anything a go. A moving description in “The Clay Marble” of boiled rice with dried fish fried in chillies and garlic inspired tonight’s dinner menu (although we had the luxury not afforded to Cambodians in a refugee camp of supplementing ours with some Chinese Cabbage, which is growing prolifically in the garden).  The little two potential-fusspots hoed in and came back for seconds and thirds. Tick. Tick.

BORING BOOKS (a scandalous suggestion!)

Friday, September 7th, 2007
Books may not be boring, but the titles of my online bookshelves are certainly lacking in the inspiration stakes. All of my blogs have bookshelves, and not one of them bears an interesting title. There's Garden Reads on Up ... [Continue reading this entry]

When we're away we are all going to keep a journal. The kids don't know it yet, but I've managed to pick up some nice not-too-little-but-not-too-big ones to tuck in their packs and be discovered on Christmas morning. Rob hasn't ... [Continue reading this entry]
