Bye Byron Bay

March 31st, 2004

Hi y’all… currently Jim and I are in Brisbane, so I am about one location behind…

The last two days we spent in Byron Bay, which is a very laid-back town on the beach. There are tons of surfers and TONS of hippies everywhere. We stayed at a really nice YHA that had a $6 BBQ one night. We played cards with two English kids and a German girl, then shared our wine with a Japanese guy. Hostelling is cool!

Wine Tasting in the Hunter Valley

March 29th, 2004

So two days ago, in Newcastle, we signed up for a wine tasting through the hostel. Most of the tastings were very expensive but this was much cheaper, and it was something we both thought would be interesting, so we did it!

Pics Added

March 27th, 2004

Hi all, I FINALLY found a place where I could put pictures on from CD. I swear, it was easier in Thailand! So look at the main Sydney entry for several pics and I added ones to the Full Moon Party entry and a couple others….let me know what you think!

I will write about the wine tasting later.

We’re in Byron Bay right now but unfortunately I gotta go since I don’t think I have enough money to pay for the ‘net! Later!!

Surfin’ to Newcastle

March 26th, 2004

Hi all!

So we are now in Newcastle… we arrived yesterday morning and broke down and bought a YHA card. (We’re staying at a YHA)

We found out that there was a big surfing competition that day (“Surfest”), with the main event being the men’s world champ (Andy Irons, I think) vs. the women’s world champ (Layne Beachley). So of course we made our way to the beach and it was LOADED with people, I think about 20,000. (I read in the paper.) Ih ave to mention that I don’t know a THING about surfing and I’ve only heard of Kelly Slater, and that’s it.

Finally-details on Sydney

March 24th, 2004

Anyway, we bought a big Greyhound bus pass for the east coast and tomorrow we leave for a town 2 1/2 hrs away called Newcastle. I figure I’ve been in Sydney about NINE days!!

The first few days we stayed in Kings Cross, which is the red light district of Sydney but there are TONS of hostels there… practically one every few feet! First I stayed at a place called Jolly Swagmans, and it was very dirty–literally a pile of trash underneath my bunk and I had to tell them to clean it up. After two days there I moved down the street to a great place called Eva’s Backpackers.

Eating Cheap in Sydney

March 23rd, 2004

Jim and I discovered a little thing by accident that we’ve been taking advantage of over the last few days.

If you go to one of the huge underground food courts by the big and beautiful Victoria Building around 5:30 pm, most of the food places put out food with big discounts. Like Jim got 3 big sushi rolls for 3 or 4 bucks and you can find good Thai food, pasta, sandwiches for A$4 (believe me that is pretty cheap here).

Yay!

Still in Sydney

March 23rd, 2004

Hi everyone! It’s been super long since I’ve posted. Internet costs a fortune here, well, everything costs a fortune here. I was excited to finally be able to put up a pic oe two, and I just spent a HALF HOUR going thru the pics and making a few smaller, and I came on here and for some reason the “upload picture” button isn’t working… so it was all a complete waste. Great.

We’ve done a lot since we’ve been here, including going to the awesome Aquarium. We’ve walked so much my feet burn. Yesterday we went to Manly beach and relaxed. I have a lot to tell you about. The only bad thing is that Australia isn’t nearly as crazy and weird as Thailand so I bet my stories won’t be that interesting. Anyway, my time is up… grrrr about the pictures. Later gators!

Thailand – Final Tally

March 22nd, 2004

Click here to see my route in Thailand.

BEST thing: Natural beauty & Cheapness

WORST thing: Smell of sewage, being lied to and tried to sell something every 2 seconds, inconvenient services, and…. THE HEAT.

What I’ll Miss the Most: FRESH and mouth watering fruit shakes for less than a dollar. Also, fresh and cheap pineapple.

Favorite Place Visited: Ko Phi Phi. We only spent 2 days there and I wish we spent more there and didn’t even go to Ko Samui or some other places. When we rented a boat and were boated around the islands and snorkeled in Monkey Bay was one of the best days.

Most Overrated: Patong and Ko Samui. Granted, we were only in Samui two days and we REALLY didn’t explore very much. Patong was just disgusting. Both were so utterly touristy that there was no charm or flavor at all.

Most Underrated: Maybe Ko Tao, although it isn’t unpopular or anything. But there weren’t tons of people there. It was small and interesting and I remember flying around on the motorbike.

Sydney Bathroom Floors

March 17th, 2004

If I had to describe the weather here in one word, it would be “glorious.”

It gets a tiny bit hot during the day, but other than that, there is a beautiful breeze and very pleasant weather. I LOVE IT. But one guy just got here from New Zealand and he said he is so sick of cold weather. Something to not look forward to…?

The hostel I am at, Jolly Swagmans, had piles of trash under the beds of the 4-bed dorm room and I had to complain. The room was rather small and the window, although open, was tiny and let hardly any air in. It was STIFLING last night, and I woke up in the middle of the night with an absolutely SPLITTING headache and I went to the bathroom since I thought I might be sick. I know you don’t want details of my time in the bathroom, but when I was there, I starting feeling hotter and hotter and thought I might puke, and I was weak, and I had to basically lie on the floor of the stall because…. I just had to, my body had to lie down. I was lying on the bathroom floor!! nasty! But the
floor was cool and after a while I felt a little better. I took some advil and in the morning I was ok, but still felt a bit weak and dizzy. I drank some gatorade and ate food and gradually I felt better. It was a bit disturbing.

Today I spent mostly searching for and buying a new backpack for me, and the fake-North Face Bangkok bag is now in the trash. I got a Karrimor bag. I was ready to buy then realized I left my credit card at the hostel and had to take the subway back, and halfway home, the headache returned. It was so bad I had a hard time even walking to the hostel. It hurt right on the TOP of my head!? So I took more drugs and laid down until it was better, then I subwayed back and bought the bag.

I am doing awesome here by myself, and it is kind of fun to be alone, but I miss my travel buddy a lot.

Later I thought it would be nice to lie in the park and read the new guidebook I (finally) bought. By the time I walked there, it was getting dark and after 2 minutes of lying on my blanket, I had 2 mosquito bites on my foot. So I left. Hyde Park is so nice though, with a huge cool fountain, it is next to a beautiful church, and there are trees that line the paths and look so neat.

Did I mention the BATS???? Dude, there are huge, black bats EVERYWHERE!! Even during the DAYtime! Like, they totally look like huge bats and they fly around in the park and stuff! Weird!

Sydney seems like NYC to me, except cleaner and less people and just nicer.

HAPPY ST. PAT’S DAY! Too bad Jim wasn’t here today; he probably would have had fun. Lots of drunk people. He starts flying tomorrow and should be here the next morning.

Ok, gotta go!
