And so you’re back . . . from outer space . . . I just walked in to find you here with that look upon your face

And so began my Friday English class for the Parisian unemployed. Doing my best to make listening tasks a little less dull for all of us. I am getting into the groove of teaching after a shakey start. And hoping to take on a few private students. The last month has been high-stress negotiating a fabulous share flat in Montparnasse (tick), a job (tick), a bank account (tick), and a work permit (tick). . .

In the midst of my bureaucratic dealings I have had a few highlights.

I met up with my old French teacher who took me to an invitation-only vin-fromage-chocolat tasting on a boat on the Seine. We had a raucous time knocking back wine and chatting to the sellers like we knew what we were talking about.

I was introduced to a classic old boho restaurant on the Ile Saint Louis (in the middle of the Seine) where we ate deep-fried goats’ cheese rolled in roasted sesame seeds followed by fruit crumble and hydro-electric espressos while the band played with a fusion of flamenco jazz.

I finally got out of Paris for a weekend with some ex-pats. We did a flash dash tour of Normandy and just ventured into Rennes in Brittany. Highlights were the port-side traditional market village of Honsfleur, the historical D-Day beaches, and the magnificently gothic Mont St Michel floating on the dusk horizon. SEE MONT SAINT MICHEL:
