Venison with cider and black pudding

Saturday, October 9th, 2004

Stirling’s once-a-month Farmer’s Market has gone to crap. Once you could buy Gloucester Old Spot pork and propper game there. It was a bijou version of a proper market like the ones I remember from my childhood, an embryonic promise of what might once again become a town institution — but no more. Nowadays it is overpriced and overhyped. Can I afford to pay for a wild boar roast? Or fork out a premium for “organic” veg more expensive than the plastic-wrapped crap in the supermarket? — Not while on benefits. And whatever happened to the pheasants? Luckily I had some venison from the Aberfoyle Butcher in the freezer, so I can save the day with a Sunday meal fit to see in the autum:

Jerk chicken with rice & peas

Thursday, September 23rd, 2004

Jerk chicken with rice & peas are of course Jamaican; but for me they (and curried goat and saltfish patties…) will always be associated with New Cross, SE London — the only place I ever called home as an adult.

Mountain Oysters with Cockle Sauce

Sunday, September 12th, 2004

The summer is gone, the hills are obscured by a grey veil of clouds and drizzle and I am planning my winter-getaways (Portugal and, possibly, the Miami Winter Music Conference — watch this space).

Already, it is time for nostalgic memories of the summer that was. This year, we did not manage a late August visit to my sister’s beach villa in Borth and now it is too late to catch the last of the sunshine, to eat freshly caught fish, chips and mushy peas while sitting on a bench in the breeze or (damn) to try out her new sailing boat (we had the wetsuits ready in the boot of the car ever since hearing the news — when sailing with John you do need a wetsuit).

Greek Sunday Roast

Friday, August 27th, 2004

This is a special dinner to round off the olympics. I actually cooked it last weekend to see John off to a conference in Verona (the lucky bastard). It’s the last of the Greek recipes for now — we’re back to eating curries.
The main course is very rich, more suitable for track-and-field athletes than a couple of loafers, so I just served it with steamed vegetables and we had fresh fruit for dessert (you could offer Greek yoghurt with honey by the side).

Menu:
Fassoulatha me Eliopsomo (Haricot Bean Soup and Olive Bread)
*
Kotopoulo Yemisto (Roast Chicken with Lemon Pistacchio Rice)
*
Fresh Fruit
*
Mini Baklava, coffee

Dips & Bits

Saturday, August 21st, 2004

Great — every time I sit down in front of the TV, Britain seems to win another gold medal!
A healthy lunch while vegging on the sofa consists of lightly toasted pita bread with salad and dips. Apart from the trusted stand-bys of humus, taramasalata, olives and Greek salad this might include:

A Green Greek Supper

Wednesday, August 18th, 2004

Sport is bad for you. Whoever said it was good for you? Five days in and I am already hooked to the box; the Olympics being about the only occassion I watch daytime-TV other than at Christmas.
It’s alright for John, he at least gets to go to work sometimes, but I can envisage myself 10 days on, and 2 stones heavier with oily, acne-ridden skin, scoffing pizzas out of boxes and guzzling cans of cider.

Luckily, Greek food is quite healthy if you go easy on the oil. This dish looks fresh on the plate and tastes fresh too, although it is not “green” in the sense of being vegetarian (recipes based on Aussie’s Women’s Weekly as before):

Greek Salad and Moussaka

With the Olympics comes Food Fit for the Gods. Two weeks of Greek eats which I will review here as I get along. For the most comprehensive Greek recipe site on-line go to: greek-recipe.com. However, the recipes below are based on my tried and trusted “Greek-style Cookery” from the Australian Women’s Weekly Home Library.

Borth Beach BBQ (recipes)

Thursday, June 17th, 2004

The weather has been changeable lately, but in the evenings the sun usually comes out and BBQ smoke is wifting up from the neighbours garden through the open office window. I’m dead jealous (they’ve got family visiting. The squealing of children running about and the laughter of adults having a cold beer echoes from the walls). However, preparations are underway for our 15th anniversary BBQ in Borth. With the British climate, beach BBQs are usually a once-a-year occasion, but this year it has to be extra special. Fingers crossed…

Soup and Bread

Sunday, June 6th, 2004

Yesterday, I baked a loaf of bread. If you hit someone over the head with it, you’ll knock them out. Hmmm – I should have used a little less rye in the mix…
