Luxor, where the Pharaos rest

November 9th, 2006

Luxor is a city with very little to offer as a city, but it does has the amazing Valley of the Kings, and the Hatshepsut temple, wich are fantastic! I arrived there from Edfu in my very posh train as you already know and started to look for acommodation.
Luckily I found one of the best places I’ve stayed and by far the cheapest, the Oasis Hotel!! Read the rest of this entry »

The temple of Ramses II

November 1st, 2006

G’ day people!!
After the great Alexandria, I came back to Cairo ans spend a night there, against my will. I wanted to take the night train to Aswan, about 1200 km away, but instead of that I had to take the 07:40 one and spend the next 16 hours sitting there and looking thru the window! Hola,
I went to Alexandria last Friday, but I haven’t had the chance to post anything about it. I’m now in Luxor now, after visiting Aswan and Abu Simbel, almost 1500 Km away and many many hours in a train, but anyway 🙂

Alexandria, was the favourite city of Alexander the Great and was the cultural capital of the world for many many hundreds of years. My first impression: awful!! Read the rest of this entry »

Muslam me??

October 20th, 2006

Salam you all! This will be the post to tell you about what happend with me inside the oldest mosque in Africa and Egypt. The mosque is called Amr Bin Alas , named after the general of the islamic army that conquered Egypt from the Romans in the year 642 AD. It’s a very nice mosque, with a huge capacity!!!

Ok, so basically what happend was, I entered the mosque at 15:00 to take some pictures and to do some sightseeing of the place. Everything was very nice and normal, and then they started to pray, so I thought, cool! good chance to take some more pics, so I waited and they started, but everyone was looking at me and some of them gave me some perfume a little hat fro praying and a “suek” (a pice of wood, that you peel and then chew so it becomes brushy, and with that you brush your teeth, so your prayers are become stronger). After the praying I was leaving the mosque, and some young guys approche me, asking me if I wanted to talk to them for a minute. I agreed, and we went to a place from the mosque transformed in a huge bedroom, because in the last 10 days of Ramadan, people stay overnight in the mosque praying. They actually live in the mosque for this last 10 days and almost don’t leave the place. The mosque gives food for free, and there were around 600 people staying there.

Finally from Egypt! again!

October 19th, 2006

Hi, why again? cause Cairo electricity is not so reliable, and afetr typing for 30 minutes, shot cut ad chao typing! My bad, didn’t save :/ So as I was saying, I’m in Cairo!!! I arrived to Eilat, Israelian border and I walked the last bit to Egypt!

IMG_3060.jpg

Then after passing thru all the border controls and regulations, I walked to the nearest station and got a bus to Cairo. Now I was expecting a two or three hours trip, but it was a 650 Km distance and it took us about 6!!! It was cool, cause I was really enjoying the landscape, the Sahara, and I was also talking to an egyptian guy, who was very pleased to be my travell guide. So I made to Cairo and took a taxi, very cheap, and went to the hostel, but the driver thought it was nice to go to another one first to see if I didn’t wanted that one better. I really had to tell him like: Please sir DO take me to the one I want and not top your friend’s! Finally, I got a bed in a dorm for the very nice price of 2 euros a night including breakfast!

IMG_3637.jpg

And if that wasn’t good enough, they had this offer, pay 4 stay 5!! Great!!
