When We Went The Wrong Way (late entry, sorry!)

October 5th, 2005

Koh Samui Rupert writes
Our first stop on our unexpected tour of the Gulf of Thailand’s south islands was Koh Samui.

Largely built up for package tourists with, hints of a backpacker paradise history, this island was, to put it simply, easy. We started in Chaweng with Isabel and James, staying in a fancy room that was way over our budget. The same night we found a fantastic Indian Restaurant that had low tables and those Indian cushion seats – when calling the waiter over for another order of samosas whilst leaning back on a cushion, legs stretched out, bottle of Chang in hand, it’s not just a feeling of luxury; it’s a feeling of peaceful tranquility mixed in with subtle embarrassment.

Ancient Capital Of Thailand (but apparently not the first!)

Laura writes
As we arrived at the service station I hopped out of the van and made my way to the “ladies”. Pushing open the shabby door I entered the small cubical. Your joking I thought – I can’t sit on that! So, hovering with elegance (not), I did the best I could. Deciding whether it would be cleaner or not to wash my hands, I stumbled upon the not so pretty site of myself in the mirror. I looked as tired as I felt.

So This Is What They Think Bangkok Is?

September 25th, 2005

Laura writes
Arriving at the backpackers mecca, Khao San Road, was not an unpleasant surprise after spending several days in down town Bangkok. The images of China Town and Siam came flooding back as nightmares as we now stumbled upon freshly sweeped streets, appetising food stalls, happening bars and neon lights. This was not Bangkok as we knew it.

A Very Brief Update

September 18th, 2005

Rupert writes
We’re on Koh Phangan and then off to Koh Tao before heading back to Bangkok to see if we can get the camera repaired; damn thing had an error just as we peaked a huge climb to the top of a waterfall – couldn’t believe it, wonderful views and amazing surroundings and not a single picture to take away.

Internet is twice as expensive here than mainland so we wont say anymore until we’re back in grimey Bangkok.

I hope everyone is well and thanks for all your comments. Missing family and friends lots.

Dad; thank you for emailing and posting! Don’t understand Fay -my colour scheme is flawless- providing one is after the African-witch-doctor-house look.

We’ve got another long bus journey back to Bangkok and I can’t wait; they’re the highlight of this trip. Really.

Lots of stories about the last week to come.

To you vagabond’s out there a thirteen hour bus journey is a walk in the park, but this is the first time my arse has been sat on a not very VIP hard as the suspension on this bus seat (it feels like the bus bottoms out when it hits a pebble AWOL on the road), with a vent above my head blowing air at a temperature penguins would gladly huddle round and snigger at the ridiculous amounts of words Eskimo’s have for snow.

We’re Going The Wrong Way!

September 11th, 2005

Rupert says: In a moment of geographical stupor, but not out of character, I booked us on a bus to Ko Somui, mixing it up with Ko Somet, which is on the other side of Thailand. We’ve met a cool couple of cats who were heading that way and as I thought we were too we figured it would be fun to keep each other entertained on the twelve hour bus ride going south.

Hopefully I’ll have exciting stories to tell you from this long haul, and with any luck we’ll find an internet cafe there that reconises the iPod so we can share all these photos and continue telling you of our adventure (Grand Palace pictures to come plus more!).

A Town Of Sweet & Sour

September 11th, 2005

Laura says:China Town, where can I start. As we arrived with rucksacks on back and disorientated with blistering humidity, we made our way through the market stalls and hundreds of people. The smell of sewers was over powering and the amount of homeless people astonishing. It was here we come to realise that Thailand has no support for the handycaped, as limbless people made there way through the streets. A man with no legs using a wooden instrument on the floor to manoevour his way around was quite distressing.

Private Dance

September 11th, 2005

By Laura
As we made our way to the hotel lobby for quater past seven, we were greated by a Thai lady; “just two” she said excitedly. Just two? We were hopeful for what this meant and when we boarded the boat our surprise was confirmed, it would just be ourselves and ten crew waiting on us.

The boats amazing decore lit up under the white fairy lights surrounding the deck, A perfect setting!

The reflection of the river created a magical atmosphere as glittering Wats reflected like pretty stars in the night sky. Unfortunately the camera couldn’t pick up the images due to the darkness, but these images will remain as memories forever.

Platter by platter the food was carried out and we prepared ourselves for a fine feast, with many new Thai delights. During our first course, we were introduced into the most romantic setting as a Thai lady gently played subtle music on an instrument we had never seen before; it’s a bit like a harp on it’s side.
The second course was of the finest, with rich foods and plentiful portions, though little did we expect to be entertained with our very own private Thai dancer, Twice! Her soft and gentle poise entreged us as we watched her fingers bend so far backwards it complimented their desire to make this a very special night.

The evening came to a sweet end as we were given Look Chub (Thai desert}, a sweet paste within a cherry like shell. Certainly for the sweet tooths, a little too much for us.

As I lay in bed that evening, I thought of the magical day we had shared together, and thought to myself…..so dreams really can come true!

A NOTE ON THE LACK OF PICTURES: We couldn’t find anywhere that would reconise my iPod today so we had to update the blog without the joy of photos. A shame but it was that or no update at all. We’ll do our best to get pictures on here soon so stay tuned.
