Meandering through Maidstone

We’ve been to visit Jen in Ireland, and we go down to see Sarah every so often in Sutton, so this weekend Sarah, Lija and I went down to visit Emma in Maidstone, Kent, which is an hour south-east from London on the train.

I had got back to the hostel at about 2 on Friday, made the bed, had a shower, and dozed off at about 3pm. I woke up at 5.30am starving, so ate a chocolate plum and went back to sleep till 8. I think that got rid of the majority of any jet-lag, it certainly wasn’t like going over where I was drinking three coffees a day just to stay awake in Melbourne.

I met the girls at London Bridge, and we got falafels and fresh apple juice from Borough Market, one of my faves – they had huge blocks of cheese piled up, German sausages, relishes and pickles, evil chocolate brownies…one part was all delicacies you could eat then and there, and the other was fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and bread – homemade flatbreads with olives and peppers…(insert Homer Simpson drooling sounds), before jumping on the train. Our tickets were half the price with our under 26 railcards – ah, the bonuses of still being young 🙂 and Em was there to pick us up at the other end.

She only lives two streets from the station but nonetheless, we got a ride in her mini cooper which is oh so cute!  And the grand tour of her place, which is two-bedroom, two-storey with a backyard and a barbie. The best thing is her photos from all over the world. It was great to see Em’s African pictures and Sydney, New Zealand, everywhere. We sat out on the patio in the afternoon, then went for a walk around town (with Lija dragging us through the clothes shops and me dragging us to the coffee shop after). Maidstone has a really good shop that has all those things you thought you’d never see again, like

Emma lit the barbecue for dinner and we ate outside, gee I’m not used to this decent weather in England, and then we went out on the town for a bit. Okay, till 2am, but who’s counting? I was half asleep on the dance floor anyway, so tired I didn’t have the energy to move my feet. But it was Maidstone and no one knows me so meh! We by-passed the greasy kebab shop for toast and marmite when we got home.

Lazy Sunday with a big fry-up and pants and shirts rolled up to sunbake, yes I was actually feeling the sun on my legs. Ahhh. Spain in a week woo-hoo!
