London Tidbits
I’ve made this page cos there’s always funny little things happening that aren’t like a real post but just a new part of London life, so I’ll stick them here.
* I keep forgetting I live London!*
I was having a laugh with Clare when we were making lunch – hot potatoes – so what do you think I would start singing but The Wiggles’ Hot Potato Hot Potato. Of course, Clare’s never heard of The Wiggles, so I felt like a real doofus!
And yesterday I was telling David, new guy in the office, about some of the Aussie bands I like – Thirsty Merc, Cat Empire, Spiderbait – that he’s never heard of. All these songs that have had such an effect on my life and these people have never even heard of the bands!
Had to have a laugh at this!

Walking to work later that morning I could only see London in all of its beauty — those daffodils are simply delightful, and, oh ,what a cute wee dog out for a run. Its owner looks friendly — maybe a good morning smile is in order. Yes, there we go, and even a “morning” in reply. Ah, the people in London are friendly after all, everyone passing by smiling on their way to work.
I don’t know what used to bother me so much about living here; it’s just so beautiful — the sun shines, the birds sing. It’s not so different from New Zealand, after all. Here comes another lady who looks like she could do with a good morning smile, there we go — my best grin. Hmm … she’s coming this way, crossing the footpath towards me and, nope, she’s not smiling, she has a somewhat hostile look on her face. She’s raising her arm. Her arm happens to be holding a handbag. And her handbag happens to make contact. With my head. And at that moment my floating feet become firmly re-planted on the ground, while the unspoken London etiquette rushes back to me in an instant: thou shalt not smile at strangers, thou shalt not even make eye contact with strangers, thou shalt not display happiness in public places while alone, thou shalt not … |
