London: fireworks, moving (again) and moolah!

Time to update my blog. Well, I’m not really sure who’s still reading it, and that coupled with the woes of the last few weeks there just hasn’t been anything of interest to say. Sometimes adventures come to a standstill, and sometimes we have to stop and remember that the discovery is in the journey, not the destination.

In saying that, the last few weeks have been mental. Literally driving me to insanity. We’ve had a couple of nights out with some of our Aussie friends from Croatia, we had a movie night at Kristy’s gorging on Indian and junk food watching movies, and last weekend was Sarah and Mike’s engagement party so we went down to Sutton to help celebrate!

Bill and Mike had fireworks, and because it was the weekend before Bonfire Night, the whole neighborhood had fireworks! So we were watching them from all around, it was beautiful. On the Friday night we had dinner at John’s place, we figured our new place is so close to his that we’ll be able to walk there – cool stuff.

Lija moved in last night and I’ll move in tomorrow hopefully. This new place is in Bromley-by-Bow, which is slightly closer to the city, we’re now back in the central London postcode, and we have a Tescos a short walk away. It’s three bedrooms and Lija said the couple who are sharing the other room are nice people, she said it’s also really warm in there without much heating, great to know when real winter sets in. Still no lounge but Lija’s room, which was the lounge, is big and has a balcony with a great view of Canary Wharf (the only place in London with big business buildings that looks similar to Sydney).

Last night I spent two hours waiting outside our place for a taxi that never came with three huge bags and a million smaller ones! Lija had to go get the keys from the guys so she was at the new place, so I had to amuse myself and try and keep warm.

After I donned scarf, beanie and gloves and was still cold, I was playing ninjas and throwing high kicks on the wall and eventually trying to do a Spiderman ‘run up the wall’ something or other, which kinda worked and nearly had me flat on my butt, so then I spun around in circles which just succeeded in making me dizzy and I had to sit down which eventually made me cold again and in the end I was pacing randomly back and forth to get some speed up and a bit of warmth back.

Needless to say, we paid the guys we’re renting from to come round and make two trips taking our stuff over, and because they dragged my two bags up the stairs I didn’t need to go over there, so I just told Lija I was staying put. BUT I had her phone and she mine, cos the taxi was ordered through hers, so I told her to keep mine till tonight and I’d pack hers in with the food cos I knew she’d look there. Oh what a night!

I have heard great news today, my CRB check has finally come back along with one reference, and the second is on its way, so I am able to start my new job with a shadow shift on Monday morning. I just happen to have Monday off already, so it fits in perfectly. For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been hired by Strand Nurses Bureau as a home carer and I’m really looking forward to it. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been updating my training with first aid, CPR, health and safety, manual handling and abuse awareness.

Jasmine has been away this week in the Canaries, and today was David’s birthday so in our tradition of coffee sharing, I got him the new Christmas blend of coffee from Starbucks, and we had it with the filter system. Mmm. I also made bacon and egg sandwiches – the “Mara specialty” as David calls it, which I haven’t done in ages and it tasted so good I practically breathed it in! And to top it all off we had coffee cake too.

On other money-making news, I should say that I have been practicing what I preach. In other words, I’ve been taking some of the ideas from the website and putting them into practice. I have made over £15 from online survey sites. Basically they send me emails when a new survey crops up and it takes me ten to twenty minutes to complete and I earn instant credit.

I am also signed up for market research and I have put in a questionnaire to see if I qualify for a group discussion in two weeks where I could earn £75 for three hours of answering questions. And I’ve signed up to do some mystery shopping which could mean free food, shopping, etc. See how that one goes.

I’ve also been doing some freelance writing for MyLot and Helium, where you can earn commission on what you write – the more people that read it and enjoy it, the more you get back.

These are all little things but it means I’m keeping my writing up, as well as learning the real potentials of the internet, I can’t imagine life without the knowledge I’ve been piecing together since I started working here.

For something a bit different I’m considering applying for a job with Chelsea Football Club’s hospitality staff. There have been a few ads going around recently where you can do training and work at the various home games – how cool would that be! I’ve always wanted to do venue work, and I can watch bits of the match when it goes quiet! ha!
