The ‘Real’ Mexico

January 7th, 2007

A question was posed on a popular ESL teachers forum today. What is the ‘real’ Mexico? An interesting conversation on this is developing. People who know me know I’m a romantic when it comes to Mexico. I love this country…the bad and the good

In perusing the Mexico forum, occasionally I have heard this or that about the “real” Mexico…Is it possible for one destination, say Oaxaca, to be more “Mexican” than another such as Coahuila or Durango? When I try to imagine the “real” USA, for example, I kind of draw a blank. For that matter, where is ther real Australia or the real Senegal, Canada, etc…In My Humble Opinion, such places do not exist. What are your feelings or impressions on this one? – writes vieux canaille

Teaching in Mexico

There are lots and lots and lots of English teaching jobs in Mexico, for the first-time teacher, to the seasoned vet, to the university professor, and yes, even for the backpacking types – though adventuring and teaching through Mexico via the seat of your pants is getting harder to do.

On Being a TEFL Course Trainer

January 4th, 2007

I must say that this has been a very interesting and fulfilling job. I didn’t expect to be where I am now when I first arrived in Mexico almost 6 years ago. But, opportunities and offers kept coming, so little by little I moved from the intention to write freelance travel pieces, to TEFL-ing, to being the lead TEFL course instructor at Teachers Latin America
The best part of the last 6 years is having met so many different people from all over the world.

January 3rd, 2007

Thailand TEFL Trouble?

I’ve been watching developments and writing about Thailand of late, trying to sort out the mess over there as the country adopts stringent measures for those looking to teach English there. TEFL Watch and the TEFL News Network have it all laid out for us, by the book. It looks like it’s going to be serious challenge to try teaching in Thailand.

Here is an article from TEFL Watch that explains the issues and new requirements:

Good question. Clearly, one needs to know what one can earn before heading out on the Great Adventure.

Answers to Mexico Questions

January 3rd, 2007

Humble Me

If you know me from Dave’s Cafe forums, from This Guy is Teaching Abroad, or from Teachers Latin America, you’d know that I like to help people. This is a new blog for me and one that I will dedicate to issues of teaching English in Mexico specifically and teaching English worldwide broadly.

If you have a question, please don’t hesitate to ask me, using the comments section. I have a whole category devoted to answering questions, and filling it up will help others who have similar queries. If I don’t have the answer I’ll direct you to someone who does.

Mexican EFL Students

January 3rd, 2007

While I’ve very little experience teaching anyone but, Mexicans have been a joy to work with in English classes. I don’t know if that’s so much for being Mexican or for being Spanish-speakers, but either way, everything from class sizes, to crossing cultural divides, to getting students to talk has been relatively easy and painless.

Except the kids.
