TEFL in Thailand – Big Changes

Thailand TEFL Trouble?

I’ve been watching developments and writing about Thailand of late, trying to sort out the mess over there as the country adopts stringent measures for those looking to teach English there. TEFL Watch and the TEFL News Network have it all laid out for us, by the book. It looks like it’s going to be serious challenge to try teaching in Thailand.

Here is an article from TEFL Watch that explains the issues and new requirements:

A lot of confusion has reigned supreme in the last month or so concerning new requirements for teachers in Thailand. At first, it was difficult to believe the posters on various forums talking about the new requirements. It didn’t take very long for a pattern to emerge, nearly every poster who has been given information from their school has come with the same information and it doesn’t look good for many long time teachers in Thailand.

The new requirements vary slightly, depending on who is reporting them, but they basically boil down to these requirements:

Teachers who started at a school before 12th June 2003 must show:
1. School contract, work permit and letter from their school
2. A 4 year degree in Education or any 4 year degree and have completed a 1 year course in an Educational field.
3. Passports and visas
4. Photograph

Teachers who started employment after 12th June 2003 must show:
1. School contract, work permit and letter from their school
2. Passport and visa
3. A 4 year degree in Education or any 4 year degree and have completed a 1 year course in an Educational field.
4. Photos
5. Proof of Teaching Certification in their home country
6. Proof of 1 year of teaching experience in their home country
7. Pass an exam on Thai language and culturee
8. Pay 500 baht

Go on and read the rest of the article at TEFL Watch for their insights as to how this will all play out in the coming months.
