January 03, 2005Donkey
There i was sitting in our new red hammock reading my book, my fourth novel so far in the trip which says a lot about the levels of sitting in the sun and doing very little. Anyway there i was and it was close to sunset, the sun had turned orange and was low over the ocean next to the lighthouse and from the road behind me came the at first funny then quickly annoying donkey car hooter that you hear way too often in london followed by the grinning driver who then proceeds to do it again and again off down the road and into the distance. It can be a horse or a tarzan or a monkey noise but in this idyllic location as the sun was going down it was the last thin i wanted to hear. The last time i heard it was back in london on the tight bit of Great Eastern Street where its all narrow and dangerous and on one side of you is a massive truck and on the other is the crazy old man painting cyclists keep on the road on the pavement...you know what i mean, anger on all sides and then you hear the braying donkey and see the white van man who thinks its soooooo funny for the 55th time that day and laughs to himself or to anyone that actually acknowledges him...the icing on the cake of Great Eastern Street...and there it was as the sun was setting over the Pacific and the bats were starting to stir, I turned from my book to the road and it was the funniest thing i have seen...there it was, struggling up the hill, a pickup truck with a big cage built onto the back and inside was a braying donkey...everytime i hear that annoying sound back in London i will always think of the beauty of the Pacific coast of Mexico and the white van man or the grey looking motorcycle courier will always bring a blast of colour back into those london streets.
