Cannonball Run.......

Over 2 weeks of being lazy and sitting on beaches and learning to dive and it was time to move on....the ferry left from Coxon Hole at 7am on Sunday morning so our journey started at 5.30 when the alarm went off....Sue the owner of our place for the last 2 weeks had sorted out a collectivo to pick us up at 6am...the ferry port was packed as we queued for the tickets, i thought we might get the thing to ourselves but as in most places so far there were plenty of other people waiting to travel...it seems the whole population of Central America is always on the move....we got into La Ceiba for 9am and got a cab over to the bus station...there are two bus stations, one for the posh expensive buses and the other one where we were headed....not as frantic as some we have seen but still pretty hectic....the difference in prices make it all worth it though, the posh bus was over $20 to get to Tegucigalpa, here at the cheaper end it was $8....there is of course the still cheaper local chicken bus option but it means days instead of hours but probably for about $2 or $3 we could have done it....anyway our 'express' for $8 was good enough.....it was 9.30 and the bus was leaving, unfortunately sold out, the next was at 11am; sold out so 12.30 it was...3 hours wait in the tiny waiting room of Cristina bus lines, it was like being in Mystery Train... Three hours sitting there waiting for Elvis...Elvis never came but three hours of sweating and we were loading up for our 6 hour trip through Honduras to the capital, a name i still have trouble with.... Tegucigalpa!!! Roll on the pub quiz with that question...anyway the bus was comfortable, really hot but with huge opening windows you could lean out and watch the countryside fly by....our trip down south from La Ceiba turned out to be all about speed and it got quicker and quicker as the hours and days rolled by, its a long way to go with a short time to get there and the drivers are gonna do what they say can't be done...we arrived in Tegucigalpa after dark in what Lonely Planet describes as a very dangerous area where you shouldnt be after dark, especially around the bus station where we were now standing with all our worldly goods, luckily the same Lonely Planet gave us the location of a 'nice' hotel just a block away. We ran the gauntlet of taxi drivers and got into our new room within 5 minutes...safe and hungry, not willing to wander the mean streets for too long we got one of the taxis to drive us to pizza hut, a generic but safe option for two travellers who were almost on the verge of collapse....vegetarian and filling but not quite an adventure we hopped back into another cab and sped back to the hotel for the next leg of our high speed journey....the tica bus is the easy option for travelling long distances in Central America and their own private bus station was a few blocks away, the bus left at 9am and we were there for 8 as its the only departure each day heading to Managua which is the capital of Nicaragua....our next country...........................
