Tilawa Bowl

mike start-19-02 094.jpg
sunset session at tilawa.............
tHIS was taken on the last night of our epic stay at Tilawa, we got there 5 days before and were excited about the weekend comp we had heard about at Tamarindo. It was quiet when we arrived at the park, there were a couple of tents scattered around and a few skaters riding the driveway....the bowls looked so nice but the weather looked like taking a turn for the worse and it did. The next day we woke up....looked out of the tent door and there was the most amazing park but it was blowing a gale and the rain was paralel to the ground....the ambulance was there and there were skaters and bikers in the back of it but they were sheltering from the rain....the good thing was it was so hot and windy that as soon as it stopped raining it dried up within minutes....the park was completely dry with the use of a brush within half an hour, the grass and the trees and our tent were still dripping...by the time saturday came there were tons of bikers and skaters and rollerbladers, all pretty much in harmony and getting along and friendly....not since the edge has the world been so unified....kinda!! People were making introductions and you couldnt go far without a friendly word or a smile.....the contest started and the guy on the mike droned on and the beastie boys were on repeat it seemed....intergalactic, intergalactic, intergalactic, planetary.....ad infinitum, intergalactic....anyway with a small hendrix break, not lucien or neil, but jimmo, then back to intergalactic....blah blah, i digress courtesy of pilsen/closs red....it was rollerblade first and then bmx and then rain....rollerblades passed me by but im sure its rad, bmx is closer to me....some guy did a couple of backflips....someone tried a flare and a couple of people were tech with framewhips and icepicks....i agreed to be a judge for the bmx comp but as you can see i dont really know my can can from my cherry picker so i'll leave it to the experts like pike pardon and anyway michael talked me into being a judge in the skatecomp the next day which was super cool.....the weather changed at night on the saturday and all the skaters who were staying in the hotel....sponsored and from all over costa rica and panama showed up for a night session that included the odd drink, the odd hilarious cigarette and a few scraped elbows and knees......a good atmosphere and everyone was still so nice and friendly....all ages too from the youngest grom to the oldest longboarder......nice.....the comp started the next morning with no sign of rain....i got free beer as a judge and so did michael and the longboard dude i never knew his name....the music kicked in and it was perfect, black flag, ac/dc, metallica, fifteen!!, operation ivy!!!!, bad religion, the misfits, the exploited?????? punks not dead wattie??? what this costa rican was doing with an exploited live album i'll never know but things got better when whiplash, metallica and not the dodgy band was played....the highlight for me was nervous breakdown and skating in the pool coping edged bowl.....sorry to anyone who doesnt share my love of skateboards and punkrock but it was a big moment......anyway on with the comp.....we judged, they skated, some won others lost but to be cheesy everyone loved it and we finished the day drunk and in a hot tub......the next few days the crowds thinned out and we all skated and had fun and checked out some hikes and the wildlife that was around the area.....howler monkeys, toucans, huge butterflies, bugs that lit up at night and a huge dog called zeus that sat on your feet and dribbled over your food.......met some super nice people there who we spent long days with chatting, eating,skating........evie, effren(chakal), michael......pictures and hopefully video clips will follow in the next week or so....it was sad to leave but we eventually did and we hope we see all of you again soon.....the bowl was amazing and so was the whole experience.........the next stop was santa elana after a backbreaking bus ride....................
a cool blog from greg, have a look.....
Still going off in London.
