October 20, 2004Still day 9: Hotel Nacional
After dinner (spaghetti), I went to the Hotel Nacional, which is a beautifully restored hotel with a grand entrance and big patio. I met up with Tatiana and Andreas to see the Buena Vista Social Club. We were a little bit misinformed and I was getting a bit worried when the first band came on and they were all young people, especially as I dragged my two Austrian friends along... But the next band was El Gruppo de Compay Segundo. Compay Segundo was a member of the BVSC but sadly he died last year (well, he was about 95). This band is directed by his son and luckily, they were lots of old guys playing Cuban son, so the style of music was the same. The last song was... Guantanamera... and Andreas got a bit cross because he hasnīt been able to get the song out of his head since I told him the words. Thereīs no escaping it in Cuba, Iīm afraid! I also had my first mojito, which was very nice indeed! Comments
