Day 162: Mt Aspiring NP

I had difficulty getting up as I had slept badly (perhaps because I checked my bank account) and had nightmares.

But at about 9, we were ready to set off for Mt Aspiring NP, for more walking. The NP is 54 km away, and soon the road became unsealed. Keiron managed to get us safely there most of the way, but 6 km from the end, we were thwarted by a small river across the road and a sign saying you had better drive a 4WD if you wanted to continue beyond that point.

Now, Dougie (our car) may be a sturdy fellow, but a 4WD, he is not. As he does not belong to us and we don't want to pay Avis the rest of our money, we made the executive decision to turn back. Which obviously meant Keiron driving all the way back again...

Instead, we did a walk called the Millennium Walkway, which skirted lake Wanaka. It was very hot. We stopped at a nice spot by the lake to have our sandwiches.

Back in town, we had a huge icecream (two giant scoops!) as it was still icecream-melting hot.

In the evening we made jacket potatoes, Keiron tried out the trampoline and we sat in the car listening to the radio. We have taken quite a liking to Classic Hits FM, if not to Kiwi music, which has a distinct hillbilly quality to it (I apologise to all Kiwi's for this generalisation - but that's what I found).
