Day 79: Feliz Navidad

I was wondering what La Paz would look like on Christmas day, so after listening to Tom Helsen for a while and having breakfast, I set out to see the city on Christmas day.

As expected, it's a lot quieter than normal. Everything is closed apart from a few lone stalls selling mobile phone covers. There are noticably less taxis, trufis (collective taxis) and minibuses around.

I went to see if I could find a centro de llamadas open, and figured my best chance was the tourist district around calle Sagarnaga, which turned out to be a good bet. I called home, and went to look for an internet cafe. I had loads of emails, which is always nice...

I had lunch at Cafe La Terrazza, which is quickly becoming 'my' cafe because it's just a nice place to sit and they do really nice sandwiches and fruit juices. After, I went to the cinema to buy my ticket for Ocean's 12, with George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

There was a girl behind me and she turned out to be Dutch, and was called Irene. We went to have a drink before the film started and she told me she had been volunteering in an orphanage in Sucre for two months and would be travelling with her boyfriend now, she was going to pick him up from the airport tonight. It all sounded very, very familiar...

At the cinema we were shown to our seats, it was quite busy. There were lots of trailers, which I always like, and no advertisements! Or maybe we missed them because we were late. The film was slightly far-fetched but a definite improvement from Resident Evil II... After, I walked around the main street for a while, watching people.

I had dinner at Alexander's, another cafe, because I was still full from lunch and didn't feel like a big meal. I read my Harry Potter and finished it in the evening, while eating Nestle chocolates in my room (Nestle is about as ubiquitous as Coca Cola around here) which is a problem because now I have run out of books again...
