Summer Hiatus

We came out of the Middle East no worse for wear, with the possible exception of being seriously tired of cucumbers and boiled eggs. And as of now we have no plans to blog about our day to day lives in Saskatchewan this summer, which I'm sure is disappointing for everyone. But come September we'll be off to SE Asia again for a return visit to Thailand and to check out some of the places we missed last time around such as Vietnam and Cambodia. We are also going to fly from Bangkok to Nepal for a month of trekking and exploring. Should be plenty to write about then....

An Affair to Remember: Part Two

April 21st, 2008

jordan-117.jpgSo far our new relationship with Jordan had followed the usual pattern – at first it’s all new experiences (Wadi Rum) and crazy sex (Petra), but eventually things slow down and you have to meet the friends (Dana, Shobak), then the parents (Amman, the Dead Sea), then the novelty wears off and you realize the sex isn’t so much crazy as strange and embarrassing (Jerash). These Old Mango Shoes Feel Like Dancing

March 28th, 2008

dean-030.jpgWe eventually made it to Luxor after a 5 hr ride in a tinytaxi with a driver who, by the look on his face once in Luxor, and white panicky-horse eyes, he may have never driven outside his hometown let alone an unfamiliar city of 500,000 people. Read the rest of this entry »

Black and White Deserts: Living in Harmony

March 22nd, 2008

dean-259.jpgInstead of backtracking through Alexandria and Cairo we decided to take the aptly named Desert Road, 420 km across, you guessed it, the desert, to Bahariya Oasis. Read the rest of this entry »

Donkeys and Deserts

March 16th, 2008

siwa-005.jpgFrom Cairo we took a comfortable train to Alexandria, Egypt’s 2nd largest city, which sits right on the Mediterranean. We only stopped for one night: nice corniche along the water, checked out Fort Qaitbey and then their famous library. That’s right, we traveled halfway around the world to see a library. Nice library though. Lotta books. Read the rest of this entry »

Cairo: Land of the Gods

March 11th, 2008

Or does it actually translate to “Land of the Smoke-Belching Ladas”? Sure, it’s easy to bash Cairo because, let’s face it, the place isn’t exactly the definition of a model city. Traffic, people, smog, people, noise, people, etc. etc. Read the rest of this entry »
